| We don't have our baby yet, but will in about 5 weeks. What is the best training technique for a husky??? I have goldens that will do anything for food/love, and just want to please you, so training is always a breeze (well, almost always! . Huskies, it seems, are very smart and more independant minded, so I don't think what I have done with the goldens will work for her, correct?? I am thinking I like the idea that nothing is free training, giving positive and neg. consequences to her. Can someone please point me in the right direction here.? Any suggested readings??? I am a bit scared of starting off on the wrong foot here. Thanks!!! This is a great forum. |

| Honestly time will tell. It all depends on the pup. Some are easy to train and some are hard. The key to a husky is finding out what motivates them and use it. Also, time and consistency and most importantly patience. You can try the way that you trained your goldens first and it may work but may not. Just remember to always use positive reinforcements with huskies- they work much easier with this! I had Cally trained to sit, lay down, give paw, other paw and rollover at 7-7 1/2 weeks but then my bf's brothers old husky took until she was about a year to learn some things. It all depends on the pup! Hopefully you get an easy one Good luck with your pup and remember there are always people here to lend some help!

cow-hocked Congrats to you as well!! If you don't mind my asking but since our pups are the same age, where are you getting her from? Good luck with your little one! And thanks for the advice to wait and see the pups personality. That is certainly true!! |

| I had just gotten my first ever Husky in July. Royce was 2 months old when we got him and I'll be completely honest, he was a holy terror. He would bark and cry throughout the entire night in his kennel, use our floor as his personal bathroom, the list goes on for days. Over time, he understood that I was the Alpha male, and best of all, he seemed to have taught himself to go outside! Don't get me wrong, he's still a terror at 7 months old, but he's slowly and gradually getting better. This is the 2nd puppy I've ever raised, so it takes time and a TON of patience, especially with a Husky, since they're very stubborn and will be more concerned about wanting to play with you at 3 am, than letting you sleep. Just keep pushing yourself and giving your husky good training. The beauty of a husky is, they learn incredibly fast. It took Royce about 3 hours to understand the "sit" command and another 2 hours to learn "shake." Just always be firm with your dog and another tip that I've learned is, don't constantly give your dog treats for every small thing he does right. I did that with Royce his first month, and he eventually realized that if he were to even see the treat bowl, he'd start barking and howling for one, no matter time it was.
Good luck and just remember...Patience, patience, patience! Your dog will become best friend if you give him the proper time. |

| Hmm I think I've gotten lucky so far compared to Royce lol. Yuki destroyed a few things when she first came home but she was just training my mom not to leave stuff out The first night home was no problem, she's never cried or whined. Crate training was a breeze, all I have to do is say 'bed time' or 'in' and she goes right in. As far as tricks and behavior goes Yuki's been a charm, she knows all the tricks in the book and I've run out of ideas on what to each her next. She learned all the basics within two weeks of having her and then some of the harder tricks by 3 months. I'll admit I was a bit lazy in teaching her XD. Yuki's incentive is simply her food. She loves her food A LOT, I think she will go to the ends of the earth for it. Whenever I give her a bath or put her in an uncomfortable situation or just want to reward her I just use her food and it works like a charm. She easily forgets that deadly water running over her as soon as she smells that kibble! And it helps with socializing her with people because she'll be like 'nah I hate you', 'wait you have food?' XD |
