PostSubject: Size matters?    Size matters? EmptySat Dec 08, 2012 12:30 pm

A lot people point out Rox's size when I bring her out with me, especially when I have her around other huskies. She fluctuates with her weight a lot, when I checked last she was 35-36 pounds, I'm bringing her to pet smart with me later so we will see where she is at as of today. As for hieght she is right under 22" at the withers. She is 21" and some. When I brought her to the vet 2 months ago he was suprised to see a Sibe that small at her age, he said she was the smallest he has ever seen on 20+years. Her dad was a purebred with papers, but I didn't see mom and I know she wasn't registered or anything. He thinks she is a mix, he pointed out the possibility of Shiba Inu. When I look at her I can't see any other breed looking at her markings, face shape, ears , colors, and mask. The only thing stand out is the size. She was the last one out of her litter, and during her first year of life she has been my sickling, plus had giardia twice and every worm you can imagine except for heart worm.... Multiple times. However when she hit 7-8 months she started to sprout.. Stopped... 11 months hit another spurt... Stopped... And now she will be 1 on the 22nd this month. I recently read that they hit little growth spurts randomly. Length and height wise do they still grow or would it just be more of a weight thing. She does look a tad bit lengthier than last month but not by much. And I'm not sure if her being sick and getting worms repeatedly earlier on has/had anything to do with stunting growth? I also need to begin to transition her food, but im questioning brand. Months ago I had to switch her from blue buffalo to Iams due to the cost, she seems to be doing well with the puppy chow but I'm deciding if I should get the adult food(iams) or switch to a different brand. Reason I ask her her weight is fine. Then I see our family dogs who are on the adult food and they are fat! Anyways I'm rambling but opinions, thoughts, advice, suggestions about food, size, rate of growth, and so on so on. I'm told they don't stop growing until about 2. Just for the record mix or no mix runt or no runt I love my little rascal of a husky!!

Standard for a female is 20-22" at the withers and 35-50lbs, a lot of people mistakenly assume that huskies are BIG dogs and they aren't. Siberians do develop slower than other breeds, and even within other lines. The Siberians I have now are from lines that take 4 years to fully develop, but my previous ones were faster to come together around 2 years.

I agree she falls in the stamdards I have seen a couple of females full grown 3 or older that are small than your girl. I believe there are a couple on here have small girls.

Every time I bring her out people seriously ask me what she is( it's kinda obvious!) I said she's a Sibe husky and they literally, even some husky owners, argue saying oh no she's to small she's a mini husky as if that is a completely different breed. It's like well I know she falls into the standard and I tell them that but it just makes me wanna slap them cuz they are so set on criticizing her. Someone even argue that she was a Klee Kai. She is nothing like an akk, her personality doesn't even match an akk, at least not the one's I've been around. She is really the perfect size for me regardless I'm under 100lbs so any bigger and it's a workout for me.

You know she is good size. My two are Male 22" weights about 50lbs he is a lttle over 2 years of age.

My female is about 20" weights about 42 lbs she is about 2 1/2 years old (not sure she was a rescue).

I have a neighbor who has a female husky that when first saw her I guess her to be about 8 months old he told me she was almost 3 years really small in height but a bit over weight.

LOL, just because they are a "Sibe person" doesn't mean they know the breed or the breed standard. You are on the right track knowing her size and weight to be appropriate for the age. Most likely they are being thrown off by her not quite puppy, not quite adult look. My girls are going through that right now with the puppy pin heads and almost adult size bodies.

I think she's fine, people always tell me that my girls are small. Maya is 21" and 42lbs, Sophie is 22" and 38lbs, and Kay is 20" and 35lbs. Maya is 4 years old, Sophie is a little over 1, and Kay is about 1 (she's a rescue so I'm not sure about her age).

My female is 19.5" and 28lbs, and a lot of her weight comes from her legs. She has a very small body and head and is commonly mistaken for 6 months by other husky owners.
She was 22ish pounds and 17.5" until she hit about 10.5 months, and didn't get into the 20's until 7 months.

As noted by many members, your girl is well within the age and gender range for Sibes.

We have a 3yr old male you measures ~24" and weights 53lbs. I've had comments ranging from, "you should feed that thing" to "is that a malamute?"... scratch

Keno is the smallest of my bunch, and people often mistake him for being the youngest. He is just a lanky, thin boy. He was also the runt of his litter, but he is about 50 pounds give or take a couple, but over all he is just thinner and looks overall smaller than my other 2 boys.
I have 3 males and they all vary in looks/structure and weight.

A lot of people (including the vet techs at my vet) are under the impression that sibes are big dogs. In all reality, they're leaner than people think. She is definitely within standard. Karli is only a puppy and I've already been asked if she's a mini husky. Rolling Eyes

Yea my vet is convinced she is mixed with a Shiba Inu. He made a big deal about her size but then before he saw her another vet thought she was just right and convinced she's a purebred. I took her to pet smart a little while ago, she had a blast because a bunch of little kids ran up to her and she licked them to death. She's amazing with small kids and showin off her tricks without me commanding her, she received a lot of treats! Anyway she weighed in at 34lbs today. I'm curious as to how she's going to look a year from now, how much she's going to sprout out, but I'm enjoying the never ending puppy stage.
