Dog door training tips? Empty
PostSubject: Dog door training tips?   Dog door training tips? EmptyMon Nov 26, 2012 6:05 pm

Ok i do not have my pup yet i will in january.. But here is my situation and i would like some advice please.. Ok well when im not home my puppy will be in a breeze way (inclosed like sun room with access to outside) there is a dog door that will lead to a fenced in yard. What is the best way to train him to go in yard.. I do have another dog who is a mutt and he is old.. He has been doing that for years (he never comes in the house though but my dog will) will my dogs actions of going through the dog door outside help my pup? And when training him should i like put him through the dog door and watch him go in the fence with him? Or should i just carry him out to the fenced in area? Any suggestions, tips, or problems with my set up? Thank you!

We have a cat door that Kale used to fit through, never taught him to use it, he's so smart he watched the cats and Violet do it. He learned (much to my dismay) from them. I was so glad when he got too big to go through it.

Both my dogs picked up on the dog door within a day or two on their own.

They went out the door.. But they were using it on their own after a day or two so I didn't have to go out with them after they utilized it themselves.

We didn't get the dog door until after we had started house training them, but to get them to use the door in the first place I sat on one side, my husband on the other. Using treats we enticed them through. It only took a day or so. Once that was mastered we used both ways to continue house training. If it was morning we just put them outside...after a meal or something, opened up the doggie door.

All of mine picked up going thru the doggie dog within a hour of starting training. I would go on the other side with my wife on the inside and partially open it and entice them thru. Did this a bunch of times in a row and never looked back.
