Stinky Neck? Empty
PostSubject: Stinky Neck?   Stinky Neck? EmptyMon Dec 31, 2012 11:34 am

Last year when Hayden's coat was filling in, he started developing a really nasty sour milk/baby food peach smell around his neck. After he blew his coat the smell went away, thankfully! Well, the smell is back again in full force!

What's weird is its only around his neck. The rest of his body is odorless!

He was out in the snow over the weekend and I don't know if its a moisture build up in his second coat or what! Taking him to the groomer doesn't even take this smell away. I'm at a loss.

Any suggestions or has someone experienced this?

Could it be his leather collar?

It could very well be from the collar. If it gets wet, and the smell leeches into his fur. There is quite a few different chemicals that go into tanning a hide to make leather. I do taxidermy, so I've dealt with the smelly chemicals.

I'd say the collar, both mine develop a stink with their collars. One reason why I now use the nylon collars and once a month or so they get tossed in the washer with my work clothes. (don't use bleach the colors will bleed out)

I would pinpoint the collar too. They probably used some chemicals to preserve the leather. Did he have the same collar the last time he blew his coat?

I would use a different collar that you can toss in the wash. Juneau has a Lupine collar but I also put essential oils on it to keep the fleas away. And it makes her smell good. Smile

After thinking about it, it doesn't make sense that it would be the collar. The smell goes away after he blow's his coat and during that time he was wearing his collar, so I would think it would continue to smell.

The smell didn't come back until his coat was fully in.

It's so strange!

I'd have to agree with everyone about the collar. I think leather in general stinks....and a wet leather collar...now that's stinky!! lol
