PostSubject: potty training in progress   potty training in progress EmptySat Nov 17, 2012 4:01 am

hii people,
im new here with my new husky pup ! Smile

since im waiting for my crate to be delivered, my pup (rambo) sleeps in my room. in the corner with his toys, blanket, cusions etc.
and just in case, i placed newspaper in front of the door.

he always seems to pee there now. which is good! and smart!
but i do want him to be potty outside aswell..

after reading a few posts,. apparently im meant to STOP the pup from peeing indoors and take him straight outside until he pottys again.
even when his on the newspaper?? because i dont want to stop him while he potties on newspaper and make him think newspaper potty is bad, ( rather that , than carpets ) or is that bad still?? oh and if i take him outside , he runs to the shade and never potties. as its quite hot in Australia at the momment. SUMMER .

any advice??

thanks!

I'm no potty training expert, but maybe try putting a newspaper outside to encourage him to go outside, and when he has it down, take away the inside paper? One good thing about him knowing to pee on newspapers is sometime when you need him to finish his business because you're short on time or on a road trip or something, is that you can put down a paper and tell him to pee and get him emptied quickly. I know my old dog walker used woodchips in this way for her own pups.
I'm curious to see what other people with more experience say though, since I have never had to potty train..

My suggestion is to stop the newspapers inside, it usually teaches them that it is okay to pee in the house, some people use them- some people don't, it's all preference. I just think that it teaches them it is okay for potty in the house and then it in the end prolongs training. Try taking your pup out every hour-two hours on a leash and stand in one spot until they do their business, when they do give him lots and lots of praise and/or treats so that he knows he did the right thing. Remember also to take him out after eating, sleeping, drinking, playing, excessive running around etc. and throughout the night every couple of hours. I know it seems like alot of work but in the end it is completely worth it and speeds up the potty training Smile Hope that helps, all just a matter of opinion though Smile Good luck!
