| Subject: Question about Blue Buffalo nugget sizes (adult vs large breed). Thu Nov 01, 2012 7:20 pm | |
| Hi, I want to start feeding Tundra either Blue Buffalo Freedom or Blue Buffalo Wilderness -- he most likely has Cushing's Disease (more tests needed) and high protein/grain free diets are recommended as far as I know. I have noticed that some folks here feed Blue Buffalo, so I hope to get an answer to this question: What is the difference between Blue Buffalo "adult" and "large breed" dry foods? I am assuming it is the nugget size. Tundra is very large for a Siberian. However, he doesn't really "chew" his dry dog food, he kind of drinks it, just swallows, without really chomping on it (though he DOES chomp his doggy biscuit treats). He prefers small nuggets, that's why I'm asking. He won't even eat large nuggets. We mix his dry with canned, plus some lean chicken, pumpkin ... etc... Before we go out and spend $60 on a bag of Blue Buffalo, I'm hoping someone can tell me whether there is a difference in nugget size between their "adult" and "large breed" dry food. Thanks! |

| Okay, I've decided to just get the "adult" bag, Blue Buffalo Wilderness Chicken. I think I can't go wrong there, the nuggets can't be too large, right? |

| Large breed nuggets are usually larger but not by much. |

| Only difference is added glucosamine and chondroitin. That's it - nugget size is the same

| Okay, thank you Len and Megan. I bought the adult Blue Buffalo "Wilderness" (chicken flavor). I already use a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement, so the lower amounts in the adult variety will better suit Tundra's needs. |

| If you are looking for a high protein no grain food you should check out Merrick's grain free recipes. They will be much higher in the protein count than wilderness, I believe they offer chicken, duck, pork, or buffalo. |

I don't know if I would say it is much higher - only 4%. But you also have to look at the meat sources. Just because it has a higher percentage doesn't mean its meat. The Merrick has A LOT of potatoes - that puts me off a bit. I would say the two are pretty equal on paper. |

| I agree Megan, the differences between the two are very small. If I remember correctly they both have three meat sources in the first 5 ingredients which is always good. The other difference between the two is the new formula of Merrick does have a much higher amount of Omega 3 & 6s as well as glucosamine and chondroitin but even then, both are great quality and it will probably come down to the individual dog's taste preference. |
