| So my sister has a pitbull female. She told me recently that she had tried to talk her hubby into letting her breed the dog, but he said no (thank goodness!!) The dog is a little over a year old, female, brindle, and I'm assuming, since she doesn't have a red nose, considered a blue nose pit? Which from what I've been told by a friend of mine who owns a purebred pit that blue nose is not "normal" for the pit breed. Camo (yes, they named her Camo lol) is a sweet dog, although she's kinda goofy looking. Not gonna lie, she's on the stouter, stocky side, instead of being the tall, pretty kind. But I know my sister and I know she thinks this will make her some extra money. I'm trying to figure out how to talk her out of it. I did tell her that its not as cheap as she thinks, she'll have to pay for first shots on all the pups and dewormings. I also told her that if she wanted to make any money at all she should get Camo's hips and eyes checked. But this is my sister we're talking about and I love her to death but she doesn't see animals the way I do (I spent $1000 on my birds vet bills last yr) and I'm just worried that this could go terribly wrong. Besides the fact that there are hundreds of dogs that need homes. I had this feeling they hadn't gotten her fixed yet and I was right. When I mentioned to my mom that it was a good thing my brother-in-law had said no she told me that they had gotten her with the intention of breeding her some day. I was like "WHAT?!?!?!" There are so many dogs in the rescues right now. And my sister says that she will be picky about who gets them and making sure that they go to good homes but people's circumstances do change and you can't guarantee that they'll have the dog three years from now. I haven't yet asked her what she's gonna do if she can't sell all the puppies right away or what if someone needs to give her one back. I think I made her mad already so I backed off but if anyone knows of any good links for whelping complications (graphic pictures would be greatly appreciated) I could send them to her and maybe scare her a bit.
When I mentioned the subject to my dad he said the problem was that all his (my brother-in-law's) redneck friends would love to have a pit, that its their thing. Which makes sense why my sister has one, this is the girl who wanted a doxen growing up. So the pit was not her first choice. I don't doubt that she'll have any issues finding homes, I just don't know if they'll be forever homes. Just very worried... |

| Here's a link to a BUNCH of unwanted pit bulls, just in Niagara county. This doesn't even include the Buffalo area.
http://www.niagaraspca.org/adoptable_dogs.html
Another point you could make is how much healthier it would be for her dog in the long run to have her spayed. Breeding a dog just to make money is a dumb idea, but I'm sure you already know that. So many unwanted dogs out there to begin with. |

| That's what I tried to tell her. And a good breeder doesn't actually make any money off of puppies because of the care they put into the puppies. Love her, but she sure does drive me nuts!!! |

| Tell her to watch pit bulls and parolees.. On animal planet.. I dont think i spelled that right.. Lol.. But maybe should would realize how many pits are homeless just in that area!! And if her redneck friends want a pit have her talk them into getting one from that show!! They can then say they got their pit from a shelter on TV!! I feel bad for u the situation ur stuck in.. Something you feel is wrong vs supporting ur sister.. I am happy ur sticking to ur guna and trying to talk her out of it. Hopefully she realizea ur doing it for her just as much for the pups! Goodluck! |

| I hope you're sister changes her mind about breeding. It's really sad ... every person I hear breeding ALWAYS says the same thing. They will only give the puppies to good homes or will be picky about who they go to, but if that's the case then why are there so many dog's in shelters? Maybe you should take you're sister to a local pound and let her walk the aisle of dog's on death row that are begging for a home that were once cute cuddly puppies and see if she still want's to help contribute to the problem. I really hope she changes her mind |

| Warn her of the risks. I tried talking out a client at work to not breed their mix breed boxer. One of the first pups got stuck in the canal, the pup died in the canal, they couldn't afford the surgery to get the pups out. So all the pups AND thier poor female died. Really irresponsible and sad. They couldn't even afford to euth, they made her suffer. Stories like that usually change people's minds, cause its not just a story, it's real, and can really happen. |

Oh no, how sad! Terrible. If they couldn't afford the euth, then why do they think they can afford all of the shots/food/supplies for the puppies?! People. >:l I think everyone has stated obvious reasons. I also think you should take her to the shelter to look at the homeless dogs. She probably won't want to 'read' about how she shouldn't breed, but it's easier to see the problem that she can cause. Good luck! It's so hard to change people's minds when they're set on something! |

That is horrible. I can't tolerate watching an animal suffer. It stabbed me straight through the heart to put my Samantha down in August, but I refused to let her suffer. No animal should have to suffer. |

| Yea i love my job, but sometimes it's REALLY hard to be cordial to people like that. Kale's Dr. felt so bad that before they left he gave a heavy sedative and pain reliever as a courtesy so she wouldn't be in as much pain. |

THIS right here is MY biggest fear. I love my sister, I really do BUT when it comes to an animal suffering and money, she'd pick the money. And I only know this because she hit me up 6 months ago asking about her dog being constipated. Saying that she hadn't pooped since that morning and she was worried. A quick google search gave me some tips so I told them to her then asked her if she had any idea what could've caused it. Apparently, Camo had eaten part of her kennel bottom previously. I told her that if that was the issue she needed to see a vet asap as passing it could kill her. My sister's exact words were "well she's just gonna have to pass it we don't have the money for the vet." I lost it. I told her that if that was the case then she didn't need to have a dog and this was animal cruelty. I really made her and my mom mad at me over that. Now I'm not saying they would let her suffer if something bad happened and she couldn't have the babies. In all likelihood my brother-in-law would put her out of her misery the old fashioned way. That being said, its such a waste of a perfectly good dog. Thanks for all the tips guys, I really hope I can talk her out of this!!! |

| Walk her though all your nearby shelters. If they are anything like the ones here, they are full to the brim with pit and pit mixes. They're about the only kinds of dogs you see in shelters here, because the other breeds get adopted quicker, cause no one wants a pit. _________________ -Sara |

| I go home in April for a visit so I'll have to take her to one then. I also worry about temperament, because I don't know what her dog is like around other dogs (not even sure she's socialized the poor puppy.) They both work full-time jobs which is fine, but what she does with the dog after work I don't know. |

This is the exact situation in my area. I'd say 90% if not more are pit bull, and pit bull mixes. It's just sad to see so many unwanted dogs. Good luck changing her mind. Maybe show her this thread, so she can see other peoples opinions, just a thought. |

| That's the main dogs here too...I'm a volunteer dog walker at our local shelter and most of the dogs we get in are pits. Its not fair to the dogs. |

| Full time jobs + puppies = bad situation. Is she willing to take time off of work, because she will need to if she wants to have a litter. Meaning lost wages. Or she may come home to a dead mom dog, dead puppies, or poop and pee all over her house if the puppies get out of their welping box. _________________ -Sara |

I was thinking the same thing. And I doubt she'd be willing to take off work. They only have one car between the two of them (brand new Jeep that they are making payments on) so I doubt they could afford her to take time off. One more thing I'll need to mention to her, thanks!!! |
