| Subject: Over-filed nail? Thu Oct 18, 2012 1:30 am | |
| So we were taking our usual evening walk and Kota's SUCHHH a terrible puller. He's awful on leash. Granted, he's gotten better this week but last night he pulled so hard trying to get to another dog that he filed one of his nails to the point of bleeding and opened it up again pulling tonight. How should I go about caring for this? Will he have to stop the walks until it's healed or is there a way I can wrap it for him and continue to walk? Sorry if this is a silly question, just hadn't happened to us til now. Thanks in advance for any help. |

| I would let it heal. To stop the bleeding, you have to be very careful. I would put flour on the nail to help it clot. Give it a few days. They also sell QuikStop at Petsmart I think. Flour works well though.
Maybe try switching to a martingale or another collar/harness that prevents pulling. I use the Gentle Leader and it works wonders. Good luck! |

| you don't need styptic powder - use flour and let it clot. |

We are trying out a halti harness next week. Kota came from a line of pulling huskies so we've tried many, many harnesses haha. But he has calmed down quite a bit with just correction and we will continue trying out different collars and harnesses until we find one that works for us. Thank you! |

| I won't use Gentle leaders - it irks me to put that around the head. i use a standard nylon choke, just like for showing. |

| I used gentle leaders on Embry, they worked really well, but be prepared for people to ask you why you're dog is muzzled and why if he'll bite them.
I walk my dogs on slip leads, they work really well, it gives you way better control of the dog. I have the British style one for all three of mine, and I'm little and can walk all three by myself with them lol http://www.mendotaproducts.com/sliplead_comp.html |

| I second megan, flour is the easiest fix for that. Also is there a place you can walk him on the grass or some other soft terrain as opposed to the concrete road for a few days while it heals? |

| thumbs up for the halti harness. I use it for Dakota and it has worked wonders. We don't use the one that goes on the nose we use the one where the leash attaches to his chest.
and i agree that flower works just as fast and effectivly as the styptic powder. My older sister is a vet tech and she used flower for her her pugs when ever they got a nail bleed. |

about $10 cheaper http://www.petco.com/product/114796/The-Company-of-Animals-Halti-Dog-Harness.aspx That's the exact one we ordered can't wait til it gets here so we can try it out. Good to hear a positive review of it. I'm not ready for the gentle leader yet simply because people around here assume it's a muzzle and enough people are scared of Kota without him looking like he has a false muzzle on haha. Thank you again for all the help. |
