Hey all, I'm getting my new husky puppy soon, and her coat has changed so much in the time between her birth and now. I was wondering what you guys thought on the issue as I was -hoping- that she would have a darker red coat (I love those) but I'll take her anyway she comes. Birth. You cannot see her face, but she looks almost the exact same as her sister with the heavy mask and all. Week old or so, she is the one who's face you can see. Two weeks old. https://2img.net/h/oi44.tinypic.com/33ndvfa.jpg Four weeks old. After this she looks the same this week, no change. Any input is awesome.

She looks like she's going to be a light red and white like her mom (assuming that's her mom in the background of the second to last pic). Darker reds are usually much darker when first born. _________________ -Sara

That is her mom Momma is just the sweetest dog, her and my husky baby I've had since 10 weeks (He's 1 1/2 now) got along so well when I went to go pick out Xiah (the pup). Thanks for the input though! While I die for the dark reds, I'm happy with Xiah, there's just something about watching them grow up.... you just fall for them like kids (especially when you don't have any yourself). Do you think her coat will stay that white color? Or will go into being a more thick red like moms?

It could go either way, but my guess is like the mom's. Huskies do tend to chenge color and mask markings a lot as they grow up. My Siku had a black mask that went to her eyes, but now her face is mostly white. Elara used to be more red and now looks wolf grey and her goggles have gotten darker, then lighter, then darker again! Time will tell what they will turn out to be. _________________ -Sara

Ahh the joys of huskies. I'll bet she turns out red though one way or the other, daddy was red and so was mom, all siblings are all kinds of shades of red too. Thanks for the help though

I do hope your breeder had the parent's hips and eye checked by OFA and CERF, isn't letting the puppies go before 8 weeks, and will take back a puppy at any point in its life if need be to make sure they don't end up in a shelter. Sorry to blurt that out, but I've been reading about the sad situations bad breeders are putting new puppy owners in because they weren't responsible with they way they breed. I too was put in a bad situation from the breeder I got Siku from. Because the breeder was careless and was probably trying to save money, her puppies were infested with worms and she de-wormed Siku the day before I got her which ended up killing all the worms at once and she was literally puking up worms. She was so dehydrated and weak, she almost died the second day I had her! Thankfully the vet saved her. Here's a similar, but even worse cause it's genetic, topic: https://www.itsahuskything.com/t3317-luxating-patella_________________ -Sara

They are checked and she comes from some decent bloodlines. Her great-grandparent is one of the dogs that played Truman in 8 below. I've seen both parents pedigree. Ect ect. I've done so much research since I got Diesel (which wasn't a good situation that I got him from, but he's turned out just fine, one of the best dogs I've ever seen) that I know what to look for, what to do. I think a good year of research has gone into Huskies now for me. I've thought about breeding, but I think I'd rather stick to opening a rescue after I graduate from college. There are so many huskies out there now that are unwanted... I just want to help them all. I'm only getting a pup after having 2 adult dogs that just did not work out, I don't quite have all the money in the world right now to dedicate to extensive training (not that I'm skimping on it completely) that I might put forth in future years. I want another dog to keep Diesel company when I'm not home (which isn't often since I don't work). He needs a companion, he loves to play.

Ah yes. I guess it really will be just a big guessing game. Can't wait to see how she turns out. I wonder if she will turn out like Sollie because Xiah's mom is red with some black down her back. I'll just have to be patient.

Sabaka's parents were both black and white. His grandfather was a beautiful true red (not like Sabaka's copper color). Actually, his black and white dad came from the red grandfather and an almost silver/grey grandmother... Genes are a funny thing in huskies!

| Honestly, I think the coat color they will ultimately end up is totally up in the air and you'll just have to see when the time comes. Whether they are red or black or grey it's totally normal to see color changes throughout their lives and seasonal color changes are common as well. My sibe is 6 years old and he's STILL changing color all the time.
If you're lucky you'll get the best of both worlds and be able to enjoy her coat as it changes from darker to lighter (or vice versa) and back again. _________________ |

Jannet&Embry - it seems like my pup is falling into the pattern of yours (at least from birth to 8 weeks) She was only slightly darker than your pup at birth and now is that beautiful light color, almost white with no color line. Her mask is so dark though, that hasn't changed. She has a couple dirty faced copper brothers though, and all of her siblings have heavy masks. It seems to be a following trend that I'm noticing, that most huskies will find their general color at about 6 months during the puppy coat blow. Also Shaina&Indy - her mother's mask looks almost just like your pup at 3 months, but she has the most interesting yellow eyes. Mostly this baffled me because I had no idea about the changes they can go through. I found it so odd that she looked so light right now, and she looked so different at birth. I got Diesel at 10 weeks old and I had never seen him before that. He's also NEVER changed color, not even in winter or summer, or during a coat blow. So I got into looking at it and heard different things. This is my most recent picture, I got it yesterday.

I was wrong actually, pictures are deceiving. She actually is the EXACT same color from head to tail as she was at birth. So maybe she'll stay that way.

Sure! I ended up missing two months, from 7-9 because my husband and I moved to California from Texas for his first duty station. I flew out here, and then our family took care of them until we got the money to get them out here. But other than that I've been around 6 Weeks 4 Months 5 Months 6 Months 9 Months - Taken just a couple days ago. I think that her coloring is pretty set, it hasn't changed much over the months since her puppy coat shed. Only the texture has changed, it was really weird at first and now it's more fuzzy.

I thought Kale's was set until he went through his first coat blow at 1.5 years; he got WAY lighter.

Maybe she'll get lighter again. It's interesting to go through this with her, the only thing that's changed with Diesel is just that his white spots in his mask have gotten a little bigger over time.

Honestly, companionship is so important. If you don't mind me asking, are the parents from ravenwood? or lauradale? Just curios. |

Megan, what's bad about Ravenwood? I see a lot of it in dogs pedigrees, Embrys great great grandfather on his sires side is Ravenwood

Neither of her actual parents are from either Kennel. She's thriving though and is a wonderful pup. Of course she brings chaos but 95% of the time she is well behaved. Her and Diesel are totally in love and inseparable. (Just pointing out, they are both fixed.) It's great that they can go outside and run together or even just lie in the house together. It was a good choice. This is when she was fixed and had her back dewclaws removed. I separated them for about 10 days until I was sure her stitches weren't going to rip out from playing rough. They really love to play together. Xiah is always bringing toys to him and "poking" him trying to get him to play.
