So I read through the sloppy poo post and saw that adding the pumpkin will definitely help - I just wanted to lay out the situation and make sure/get opinions on what's going on.

Aspen is 3 months and 2 weeks old, he was originally on purina pro puppy chicken from the breeder but i went to phydeaux and they converted me to Orijen large puppy food (Orijen is supposed to be 'food of the year twice' or some gimmick?) either way - I was assuming Orijen would be a great transition for Aspen, no grain and stuff and top of the line food but... he still has constant sloppy / wet / diarrhea / when he goes poop it sounds dreaded and explodes from his butt (ha yeah disgusting!)

my breeder told me huskies can't digest rawhide that well, so I got him bully sticks instead - he swallowed a couple small ones awhile ago and my sister bought me a huge rawhide bone I let him chew on occasionally until it gets all wet and he starts ripping off tiny pieces.

The vet gave me medicine for him to take to stop the diarrhea but it didn't really work.. he's been having the runs for about 2-3 weeks now? I hope he just grows out of it but I'm starting to think that wont be the case...?

how fast was the food changed? Luna had a wet poop when we switched her food. We have to slowly get her off her old food

sometime Luna poop is wet when she drinks a lot. can that be it?

i changed it in about a week.. but he's been on his new food orijen for at least 2-3 weeks now. I figured the transition period would be over?

Aspen potties a lot because the water but I don't think drinking a lot is causing the sloppy poop

How much/how often are you feeding him?

I would also wonder how much and often you are feeding him. When I got Yukon he was on puppy chow from the breeder and I switched him to Wellness and he had runny poo for awhile. I talked to my vet, and she gave him medicine for it and it also did not help. I took him off his kibble and gave him rice and chicken and it still did not get better.


I switched him over to Taste of the Wild, and gave him some canned pumpkin and his poo firmed up over a week or so.

If he checks out fine from the vet, you have to do a lot of investigating. He might be getting too much food, his food might not agree with him, it could be the rawhide or any treats you give him is not agreeing with him.

I feed him a little under what is recommended on the back of the bag.

My breeder told me while he's a puppy I should feed him 3x a day, so I feed him around 10 / 3 / 7

I feed him a little under a cup each time. Would anyone suggest I feed him only twice daily? or more or less food?

Bully stick gave Lola the runs. We celebrate firm poops at our house. We give her a little pumpkin and yogart every day. I feel like a scientist sometimes trying to figure out the perfect diet to maintain the firm poop. It has been completely trial and error for us.

I definitely recommend Orijen it is awesome and I would stick with the amount you are giving him. Orijen is a high quality food and high in protein meant for highly active dogs like huskies. High levels of protein may be the cause of the more recent sloppy poo. If he is the more laid back type of husky than the normal hyperactive ones you can probably cut back on the amount of food a day since he won't be needing all the protein. I would try adding the canned pumpkin method to his food or go 2 days on chicken and rice to see if it firms up. Have you got him fecal tested for worms? My neighbors husky had the same problem at the same age and it turned out to be worms.

I would say maybe try cutting back a little bit on the amount and see if that helps. Maybe 3/4 morning, 1 afternoon, and 3/4 night. Then he will be getting 1 1/2 cups of food per day which should be a sufficient amount!

Sounds like a sensitive tummy if he checks out medically sound by the vet.

1 week to transition food may not be enough time for some puppies or adults. My female takes at LEAST 3 WEEKS to transition to a new food completely. This means that I add a little of the new and decrease a little of the current food and feed that mix for a couple of days before I add more new food while decreasing current food.

Orijen is a high quality kibble, but may also very well be that the higher protein content could be causing soft stool. Or over feeding could also cause soft stools.

Here is what I would suggest:

First, try a bland diet for about a week. I would use a neutral protein such as eggs. You can either scramble them (in a dry pan) or cook them up hard boiled. Mix the protein with a source of fiber which will help your pup's digestive tract to 'keep moving'. You can do veggies such as carrots, green peas, or green beans. I wouldn't do rice because your pup could be sensitive to grains. Chop up the carrots and par boil it to make it a little tender, or you defrost frozen green peas, or buy no salt canned green beans. If you decide on carrots, it'll come out looking like it goes in so don't be alarmed. You'll want to feed about 2-3 eggs and about 1/2-1 cup of one of the veggie choice. You want to do only 2 ingredients so you'll know if he does not firm up within 24-36 hours, one of only 2 ingredients are causing loose stools. Feed 3x a day (he will be eating at least 6 eggs and 1.5 cups of a veggie a day). You should see an improvement in stool within 24 hours. If not, try a different veggie.

My female firmed up within 18 hours of her first bland meal of 3 eggs and 1 cup of blanched carrots (she was 3.5 years old at the time when we went through 6 weeks of diarreha and not knowing the cause as she was medically sound.)

If your pup firms up, stay on the bland diet for at least 2 to 3 days AFTER his first firm, easy to pick up stool.

After a few days of firm stools, you can try adding about 1/8 cup (or a little more but no more than 1/4 c) of Orijen while decreasing 1 egg and 1/4 c veggie. If his stool is still firm, keep him on this mix for another 2 to 3 days before adding another 1/8 c of Orijen and decreasing the bland diet.

Repeat if his stool is still firm. However, if at time you he goes back to soft stools when adding Orijen, back off and go back to the mix of bland because you will then know if the Orijen is causing him to go soft. If this is the case, you will want to try another grain free kibble, and start with the bland diet until her firms up.

This will take time and patience but this will allow you to figure out what he may be sensitive to.

It took me at LEAST 6 months before I dialed in on my female's diet and what she can and cannot tolerate.

Canned pumpkin and/or plain non fat yogurt can help, but you shouldn't need to have to use these so that your pup has firm stools. I think of it as a band-aid and then you end up not knowing if you are feeding something that is irritating your pup's diegestive tract. Also, keep in mind, too much pumpkin can also cause the opposite effect which is loose/soft stools.

Yogurt can be a healthy 'treat' for your pup as it does have the health bacteria that can help your pup's digestive tract. I give both my male and female husky a generous tablespoon of plain non fat yogurt (with active cultures) every now and then (I like to freeze yogurt in ice trays and give them frozen yogurt treats) to help promote the healthy bacteria in their digestive tract.

Maybe try going six hours between feedings. I feed Lucian at 7am, 1pm, and 7pm. Don't know if the extra time has anything to do with, but at this point it sounds like it's worth a shot, and won't hurt anything. When I first got Lucian he had the runs as well. He also had Coccidia. But his poops have firmed up nicely now.

Balon did not like Orijen or Acana, though I believe they are good foods, I finally found he does best on Wilderness Salmon, he loves it, and his pooh is firm!
