My name is Rick, I'm from Tustin, CA. I recently acquired my first Husky, she is a "rescue." This lady found her, she posted multiple ads and posters, got her checked for a microchip but no one claimed her. She couldn't keep her (already had a dog) and was going to have to take her to the pound. I offered to take her in. She is a beautiful dog, I took her to the vet for a basic exam, turns out she is spayed already and he guestimated her age at around 3 yrs old. My wife and 5 year old son love her, and she is a very calm dog (a little to calm). Since this is my first Husky ever and first dog as an adult (I had 3 growing up) I decided to join this forum to gain more knowledge on Huskies.

Couple quick questions:

1. Any recommendations on food?
2. Is it normal for her not to bark? (she has not barked once since I got her 2 weeks ago, although she will howl).
3. I'm a runner and run her 2 miles in the morning, is this enough exercise or does she need more/less?

1. I feed taste of the wild. Other recommendations are grain free food.

2. 2 of my huskies don't bark, 1 does- he is my security system

3. 2 miles should work well, i would add a lil walk at nite just to let her see and enjoy peaceful time with you. I took cali out on 2 miles a day and she did fine, but I added a little walk at nite just to enjoy the time.

If you go down to the feeding and nutrition section, there's a whole thread of what everyone else is feeding their huskies if you want to work off of that. There is also dogfoodadvisor.com if you want to go look into foods there. It tells you the good and bad of each name brand.

Huskies are known to howl more than bark. And they talk back a lot too. So don't be too concerned about that. Also some dogs just don't bark! Two of our three only bark when they're playing.

For exercise, trial and error will be best. A tired dog is a good dog. If 2 miles works for you, that's good enough! If you do the 2 mile run and by the end of the day she's restless and destructive, you might want to up her exercise or even just provide some mental stimulation. Something as simple as a car ride or a treat filled toy works their minds and can really help to tire a dog out.

as far as food, you got the best direction on that.
for the "barking" huskies don't really bark and since this girl is still new to your family she many still need time to warm up to you, sometimes it can take months, in time you will know if she is a talker or not you might even wish back to the day that she was quite!
2 miles is a good run but how long does that take you? i like Kevin's suggestion of a nice walk at night to work on leash skills and give her time to sniff around and enjoy time with you.

I would do research on the food based on dogfoodadvisor.com that is what I did my two could not take TOTW it seem to cause alot of gas on them I tried several other brands before finding one that worked.

Only barks at the cats. Lol. Other than that he talks back and whines sometimes.

Hello! Congrats on your new husky! It sounds like she has been welcomed into a wonderful home.

Well I have been reading the forums and have decided that I want to try and feed Missy (what we named her) a raw diet. I have tried 2 different dry food brands and her poop is coming out mushy and not very solid. I am hoping this will help a bit. I'm just going to do a little more research on the subject.

huskies don't tend to bark, although, it will take her a few more weeks to really show her true character so she may start yet! as far as exercise goes, if she is calm around the house, well, for the most part, then you can be sure she is getting enough

I feed Yukon Taste of the Wild now, I switched from Wellness because he was having runny poo, so I wanted a grain free diet.

My huskies will actually bark a lot, but it depends on the situation. I taught Nikko to speak and he will bark, and sometimes he will bark when playing or when he tries to get your attention. He barks more than he does his “husky howl”. Yukon also barks sometimes, but not as much as Nikko, and he will howl and “woo” more than bark.

For exercise I take Nikko out 4 times a day on walks for a total of about 3-4 miles (more on weekends). I only take Yukon out about half that amount because he is still young.

They also play a lot inside too, so that tires them out.
