Eastern US Tick Season? Empty
PostSubject: Eastern US Tick Season?   Eastern US Tick Season? EmptyMon Sep 24, 2012 4:36 pm

Any of you hikers in eastern central US know if the tick season has died down by now? I know it still hasn't gotten too cold out. Oddly enough where I am in WV there are like no ticks, but I'm going backpacking in Shenandoah National Park this weekend and debating whether I need to get a tick collar for Phantom. I grew up in that area and the ticks are EVERYWHERE but I'm not sure when they start to die down. Advice?

I can't say for sure but here, we are usually strict on the flea/tick preventatives until late october/early november. It's supposed to be 60s here this week and it's been pretty cold in the mornings but I would play it safe. I think it's still a bit too early to be safe from ticks.

They never die down. I am not even sure I would trust a tick collar. I found a tick biting me last January. You also need to fear Lymes disease for both you and Phantom and Alpha-gal (google it) a new human meat allergy cause by tick bites. Cases of Alpha-gal are most prevalent in VA and NC. Bring your own repellant as well!!

Not a very exciting "Welcome to VA" message, is it? Sorry...

Go get yourself some Advantix: http://www.animalhealth.bayer.com/5614.0.html

Most of the bigger pet supply stores carry it now.

I don't use topicals - but I am in Michigan. In the wooded areas I use Rose Geranium Oil - keeps the ticks off me and the dogs.

Using topicals is your choice, but I don't think dosing my animals with poison is the best option when oils can deter ticks.

This was my fear, I don't miss that at all. We stopped treating Phantom for ticks (we just do a heartworm/parasite/flea combo pill) when we left VA. I'll look into some tick preventatives. Ugh.
