PostSubject: Laser Spay Question(s)   Laser Spay Question(s) EmptyMon Sep 17, 2012 10:52 am

I'm making an appointment to get Nicky spayed this week and the vet office offered traditional spay or laser spay. I've heard the laser has less bleeding and a faster recovery time.

Has anyone had experience with the laser? Or, do you think it's better to just stick with the traditional spay?

I'm not sure what exactly Callie had but she didn't have stitches or need anything removed. Either way, I'm assuming it was something other than traditional. She had hers on on the 5th and I picked her up on the 6th. She was full of energy from the minute she saw me so keeping her calm was an issue. She had three tablets of pain medicine to give her (one per day for three days) and antibiotics that we're still giving. The only bleeding I witnessed was the dried blood on the incision site and that was gone within a day or two. Two days after spay and she looked great. Now her skin is still a little raised but there's no line or anything that would suggest she just had surgery. It's just a tiny little bump! I would say she was pretty much healed in a week. I made her take it easy for the first 5 days or so and slowly started increasing her activity level but keeping a close eye on her and she's been completely fine, even when play time got rough. She had her appetite and energy and no pain that I could see. The only issue we faced was some loose stools but I think that's due to the antibiotic.

Not having to take out stitches doesn't mean it was laser or traditional. Some vets use stitches that dissolve after a while. Siku had a traditional spay and they used dissolvable stitches, so I didn't need to take her back in to get them removed.

My vet discussed the option, but pretty much said (without really coming out and saying it) that using the laser for a neuter is really not necessary. However, she frequently has people choose the laser surgery for spaying. I think it does prevent bleeding and it should hasten healing. I just don't know since I just have the one boy...

I contacted a vet I've never seen before about doing the spay and they quoted me $615.00 to do the spay. That sounds really high to me. Is that the going rate for a spay or are these people just crazy?

Um... definitely not. My spay was $390 and that included getting chipped ($54). The actually spay was like $120 and the anesthesia was $150 or something like that. Then I was charged for her overnight stay (~$24) and a few other things, maybe her antibiotics but I feel like that wasn't charged. There's a spay price thread floating around and my $390 was on the high end of the prices everyone else listed.

I paid $520 to spay my lab, and $420 to neuter Balon.

Good lord those prices!! I use the humane society and am very satisfied with my $75-150 spay/neuters.

I have heard the same, but I have never opted for laser spay or neuter because it is so much more expensive. For my girls it was $500 each to have them spayed.
