| Royce is about 3 1/2 months old now and most of the training we've done with him has been a breeze. He still has a ways to go, but when it comes to understanding commands, he catches onto it in a matter of hours, which is a blessing in disguise. We have had our troubles, but he seems to be getting the hang of it. It seems as though in these past couple of days, most of the training he's gone through has seemed to hit a reset button, especially when it comes to potty training. Since the day we brought him home, which was about a month or so ago, he hadn't pooped in the house once. Peeing, on the other hand, is a different story. When it comes to going number two, he will go by the door and whine a little bit, to which we'll hook up him to a leash and escort him outside, so he can do his business. We're trying our best to have him do the same when it comes to going number one, but we're having more misses than hits with that. Anyways, about two days ago, he pooped in the house for the first time and we couldn't believe it. He didn't give us a warning or anything of the sort. He just went. We watched him the rest of that day and continued to watch him, until he began to let us know when he had to go out. After we let our guard down just a wee bit, this morning, he did it again. No warning, no nothing. Is there a way we can keep him on track, where we won't have to worry about this anymore? It seems to be taking longer than expected to potty train him, and we want to get to the point, where we can leave him out during the night, but it seems that goal is months (maybe years) away. |

| My pup is 4 1/2 months, Its been 24 hours since he had an accident, like your pup he is incredible smart so it is confusing as to why they do not catch on to the potty training, I have to let him out 45 min after he drinks and about 3 hours after eating. If your pup pee's in the house try using a mix of 50% water and 50% white vinegar to clean it(worked for me), it suppose to break down the enzymes in the urien making them not want to pee in that spot again. They are stubborn, my dog will not use the bathroom outside unless you sit with him lol. |

| I know how discouraging it can be when it comes to potty training. I got Nikko when he was 9 weeks old, and he was about 6 months old before he was 100% housetrained. He would rarely poop inside the house, but he did a few times, but like you peeing was a different story. He would run around and stop and just pee without warning. No sniffing, nothing. I was SO excited the first time he went a whole day without peeing inside.
The new pup has been so much better about it than Nikko ever was. It also depends on the dog too. I got Yukon on August 11th, and he is now 11 weeks old and it has been 4 days since he had an accident in the house.
The key is consistency. I only feed them twice a day, and I take him out at regular intervals. When he wakes up from a nap we go out, about 10 minutes after eating, or right after playing. I also take him out at least every hour in between those times or when I see him start sniffing around. It only took him a week to start going to the door when he has to go.
I crate them both and it has been a very helpful tool as well. I started letting Nikko sleep outside the crate when he was about 7 months old and he does fine, so don’t worry you will be able to let yours out soon!

| Thank you all so much for the potty training advice! I used the vinegar/water trick and he seems to be irritated with the spot he usually pees in, as he will smell it, then his head will shoot back and he walks away. Hopefully he get's the hang of potty training soon, and that I will teach myself to remain constant and put him on a schedule, until he's 100% ready!
I do want to bring up another training problem that I seem to be having more trouble with than potty training: Crate training. I've brought this up in another forum before, but Royce seems to be having all sorts of trouble with his crate training. We've been crate training him the first night he was in our house and the first week was a nightmare. Countless hours of sleep were lost, as he would howl and bark throughout the night, without stopping once (literally) and would only remain silent if we let him out. Thankfully, we stuck with it and he's at the point now, where every so often, he'll go in on his own to take a quick snooze and at night, when he sees that we're putting a few of his toys in the kennel, he'll walk in and lay down and remain quiet for a few hours. The problem is, no matter what I do, he can't stay on a continuous sleep schedule. One night, he'll sleep a good 4-5 hours, without making a peep, but some nights he'll wake up an hour after we've put him in and he'll holler for hours, until he's let out. Lately, it's been more of an hour 1/2 shift, where he'll go in quietly for an hour 1/2, bark his head off, then do the same thing again. I'm getting frustrated, because it's pretty much ruining my sleep schedule, so I feel exhausted throughout the entire day and dread going to bed at night, because I don't know if I'll be awakened in a few hours or in a few minutes. I would like to leave him out in a gated area, but this goes back to the potty training, where I know he would go all over the house, then I'd spend hours cleaning everything up. What can I do about his crate training? I've been told by a few people that one of the only things I can do, is suck it up and just cover my ears when he cries at night, but when he will constantly cry for over two hours, it's hard to ignore. |

| The others were right. Ignoring him is key when he starts crying in his kennel. By letting him out when he's crying you're only rewarding be behavior. Only let him out after he's calmed down and has been quiet for a few minutes. When you do, throw a party and praise him tons! It'll be hard for the first few weeks, but he'll get the hint where crying/howling/whining = no attention and quiet = out of kennel and reward. Use positive reinforcement when he's good and calm and just ignore him when he's throwing his fit. Don't say anything, don't let him out, pet him, or show him any attention.
I just went through this with my youngest. He would scream and howl for hours in his kennel in my room. I just sucked it up for several weeks, and to this day he doesn't whine or cry in his kennel.
Edited to add: As far as the sleeping schedule goes, make sure you play with him and get him good and tired before bed time. When crate training my youngest, I wouldn't let him take naps longer than 10 minutes, and I would keep him going and entice him to play a good 2 hours before bed time to make sure he was good and tired and would sleep for a good bit of the night. |

| With the potty training it takes time I think Anna, who is almost 6 months old is just now not having any accidents. Some have a harder time potty training just keep a schedule and he should get the hang of it. Also do you give him treats after he pottys outside? We still make sure to tell her good girl and give her goodies for pottying outside. She loves it! It was part of the key to our success.
As for the crate, Anna hated her crate and when I say hated I mean she would cry for hours at the top of her lungs. Just like everyone else said be very persistent. Don't give up! It's very hard, trust me we all know but you can't give in. You are just back peddling. Night time was the easiest thing for Anna to get used to it took only a couple days. But day time, when my boyfriend and I would leave for an hour or so she would cry the whole time, she would be hoarse when we came home. It was sad and we felt bad but don't give in. He will be okay, just make sure to wear him out like Shaina said and give him all kinds of goodies and treats that he ONLY gets in the crate! Like a kong and chewy bones. With Anna she is just now getting use to the crate and will not cry when we leave her. It took a very long couple of weeks before we got here. Good luck, we all go through it! |

| Nikko and Yukon are like day and night. Nikko took about 3 months to potty train, and Yukon picked it up in 3 weeks. Nikko HATED his crate and would cry and whine every time we left for the first 3 months, and Yukon loves his crate. Nikko is a crazy, hyperactive husky that would rather be left alone, and Yukon is relaxed, chill, calm and loves to lay on my lap! |

| The thing with Royce, and something odd that I've noticed, is that when he cries every hour 1/2 at night and if I take him outside, he pees like he hasn't gone in hours and the minute that he comes back inside, I lead him back into his kennel and he falls right back to sleep. Last night was a little bit of a success, as we went to bed around 11:30ish and he slept til about 2 am, when I took him out and he did his business, then when I brought him back in, he sleep til about 5 am, which hasn't happened in a few weeks. I'm a little hesitant to not wake up when he's crying, because of his bathroom situation and since he's only 3 1/2 months old, his bladder is still pretty weak. He had a few accidents today, but I understand that many dogs learn at different paces. He's a very active and hyper dog when he's awake, but when he's tired, he wants to relax and have one of us itch his belly!
Thanks so much to all of you for helping me with this! As a new husky owner, it's a tough job, especially in a somewhat smaller apartment, but I know that keeping up with it will be incredibly beneficial in the end! |

| Well I completely understand about the apartment thing, we just moved into an apartment two months ago and once we moved we had to start all over again with Anna and crate training and she can be so loud. I could hear her across the pond seperating the apartments and a pool. And the bad thing is we were making good progress at our old house when we had nothing to worry about, specifically no neighbors to complain. But she is finally getting it. At night time if Anna cries at any time I do take her out to potty, and that is the only time she will cry for me anymore. When we first got her I took her out more often, and I made sure to set my alarm to get up and take her out. Anna usually won't go out at night anymore since she is sleeping through the night but she does cry for me to get up at 7 every morning to potty, it's our routine. But she does go back into the crate after each potty break. At night time is the only time you can kind of let him out when he cries but only if you think he has to potty, you will eventually be able to tell when he cries for attention and when he has to potty. Glad you are having some success, it will get better! |

| As others have said, it definitely depends on the dog. Kota learned how to ring a bell and tell us he needed to go potty in a week. As for Sarabi, it took 3 months (her first time ringing the bell for us was actually just last week). I was beginning to think she'd never get it haha. I used crate training in this fashion.. They eat in their crates so they have extremely positive associations with it. Then I'd let them rest or nap in there for about 45min to an hour after they've eaten, and then take them out one at a time. Sarabi, being the youngest, would go first. With Kota, I picked up his paws and made him ring the bell and said "outside" every time. In a week, he could do it on his own (at the same time, I made "outside" a cue word to, well, go outside haha). Sarabi wasn't getting it so about a month ago I started holding her head and make her nose ring the bell. She now gets it too as a reward for peeing/pooping outside, they get to play outside for a while. If they don't go, I'd put them back in their crates for 15min & try again. After they're done playing, I'd let them play in the house or go back in their kennels & would hide treats in there for them to find. I read that that would help them have positive associations with their crates. My puppies have always loooved their crates. Something I read somewhere online a while ago that really helped was to leash them when escorting them to potty, and when they pee/poop, praise them and take off their leash so their reward is playtime. Don't let them play first then make them pee/poop before taking them in cause they think once they pee/poop, playtime is over. And as someone previously said, exhaust the heck outta them before bedtime. A tired husky is a happy husky...and makes for a happy owner haha. Every night I try to let them play for 2-3 hours and by the time it's bedtime, they just go in their crates and knock out. It sounds like pottying is what's waking Royce up, so be sure to not give him water an hour before bedtime. The last thing I do before going to bed is take them out one more time just to ensure prolonged sleep Be persistent, it'll be so worth it in the end! He'll get it in no time |

| The same works for me. I give them lots of praise when they potty outside, and I use “potty” as the key word. It’s only been about a month and now Yukon runs to the door when he has to go.
And for overnight, they play all evening until they get tired at about 9-10pm, then I have them go potty before bed and the little one can usually hold it through the night until about 6am. There are some nights however that he wakes up at around 4 and starts whining, so I will get up and take him potty. I usually take the water away around 7-8pm though.
