| Storm seems to be slightly more alert today than she was yesterday evening. She's still visibly nervous and often trembles in fear when approached. She seems to be happiest laying at my feet and would rather come to me on her own than be approached by me.
She has finally proven to me that she has a voice. I was beginning to wonder if she had one because she never made a noise beyond a whimper yesterday. She has some severe separation issues, and she literally cries like a baby if left alone. I mean uncontrollable sobbing such that if I didn't know it was her, I'd swear a person was crying. I've never heard a husky vocalize quite like that before.
She still wasn't showing an interest in eating this morning, and when the vet called me back I asked what he recommended I do to entice her to eat. He told me chicken was a great choice because it was bland enough not to hurt her stomach and most dogs wouldn't turn it down. I baked and shredded several chicken breasts for her and have been feeding it to her in several small meals through out the day. She gobbles it, and it made her interested enough in eating to try the TOTW kibble. The last time I fed her, she ate the chicken more slowly than she had been, and I went ahead and gave her a scoop of kibble after she finished. She was laying on her belly and pulled the bowl between her front legs as close to her chest as she could get it and ate it slowly. I think it's a good sign that she's not gobbling the food anymore, but I'm watching her closely for signs of resource guarding.
She hasn't been very active, but I think that's because it hurts for her to move. She mostly lays in one place and doesn't get up. I figure that's ok because she probably needs the rest from all the traveling she was doing from her old home to my friend's house every day. I'm anxious to see what the vet has to say about her and to see how much she weighs when we go. |

| We just got home from the vet. Storm had to be sedated so they could put her on her back to get a clear picture of her pelvis. Unfortunately, our worst fears were confirmed. On her left hip where her left leg ball should fit into the socket of her pelvis, the pelvis has been shattered into 4 or 5 pieces. She said with that extensive damage, putting pins in it wasn't even an option. Basically she told me that she could go in and remove the bone splinters and then shave off part of the leg ball to make her able to walk comfortably on it, but she will never walk normally again. She's got her on pain meds and crate rest until her surgery next Monday. The vet thinks that she is only about 18 months old, and that this happened at least 10 days ago, and probably more like 3-4 weeks ago. I can only imagine the pain she's been in all this time. =(
Today's vet bill was $186. Her surgery is going to cost $255, which I must admit is less than I expected. We'll probably want to let her heal up and get stronger before we take her in for her spay.

| Reading everything about this poor girl makes me want to cry. I just don't understand how someone can let this happen to such a sweet animal, or any animal for that matter.
You are wonderful for taking her in, and I'm sure she's thankful. |

| Aww poor girl I am amazed the cost of the surgery is so low. I was thinking it was going to be in the 1000's. You are a great and generous person for taking her in. |

| Our vet is awesome, and that's the best thing about living in a rural area. Our office visits are only a $20 base fee, unless something extra has to be done like in her case. Before we got the xray, they were talking sending her to a specialist to have pins put in her pelvis, which would have been much more expensive. When we found out how bad the damage was, that idea was scrapped. Oh and I forgot to add that even as skinny and emaciated as she is, she still weighed 48.7 lbs. She's going to be a big girl when she gets some weight on her. She definitely looks taller and longer than my girls. Here's a short video I took of her when we were waiting to go back to xray. You can tell she feels miserable, but I do think she looks better than she did a couple days ago. |

| I haven't heard a word, although I've never actually talked to her personally. I don't think she has said anything to my friend either. From stalking her's and her baby daddy's facebook pages though, I don't think she even realizes that she is missing. People make me sick. This girl's 20 years old and pregnant. Makes me fear for her human baby's well being since this is how she treats her furbabies. |

| I don't understand why people treat their dogs badly.
Dogs are far more loyal than some people I've met in my life and will give you way more attention than you can possibly want. They're so keen on our emotions and behaviors.
I wish you all the best of luck in nursing her back to health. She will pay you back thousand fold with love! |

| What a sad situation storm found herself in, good job on rescuing her. I don't think the previous owner would find it to exciting to have her pelvis shattered after having her child so she probably shouldn't do it to others....just saying |

| Thanks for the updates. Glad to know that storm is in better hands now. Some people make me sick to be honest. I always hear people commenting and asking me why do I love my dog so much. Anydog lover knows the answer to that. 1. The human race for the most part is one that sucks and can.t be trusted. 2. Our dogs return the love 10 times greater than the one we show them, they are always with us no matter what and wont betray us. I honestly want people who mistrat dogs to receive a dose of their own vmedicine |

| Since yesterday's vet visit, we have been keeping her in the house on crate rest. She's so well behaved in the house. We had no idea whether she was crate trained or not, but decided just to take a chance. No accidents, and seems perfectly happy being let out to potty every few hours and immediately wants to come back inside afterwards. She's not showing much interest in my cats, which is good because they are very nervous around her. She's figured out that I'm hiding her pain pill in the middle of a hotdog piece, so getting her to take it was quite an amusing sight for my kids tonight. After about the 15th try (the last 14 ending with her spitting it out), I held her mouth shut until she swallowed it. She was pretty good-natured about it, but I'm going to have to come up with another way to get her to take them. She's such a calm and laid back girl.
I've been reading up on her surgery. Looks like she will have to go through quite a bit of physical therapy afterwards, so we're going to be on a long road to recovery. Apparently this is the same surgery they would do for hip dysplasia, and it's called a Femoral Head Ostectomy. |

| My sister's lab had that surgery done a few years ago, and has done spectacularly. She didn't have any compounding pelvis issues like Storm does, but I'm sure Storm will do just fine since she's so young. You are an angel for everything you've done and are still doing for her. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | You could always try the greenies pill pocket things. Anna has never really had a problem swallowing and usually I just hand her the pill and she eats it like candy. But when Anna was put on diarrhea medicine the vet told me it was disgusting so I decided to try those just in case. I gave her one with the pill and an empty one after just to make sure she got it down. She loved them even though they smelled nasty. We bought the duck and pea formula and she thought it was great. It could be an option but they are $8 a bag for I think 25.

You are an absolutely great person for doing this and Storm will love you for it. Make sure to keep us posted. |

| I would cut up a bunch of hot dog pieces (small) and hide the pill in one of them and offer all at once. She'll gobble them all up and won't realized she took the pill |

Ooh, that's a good idea! I'm going to have to remember that one, Lulu is next to impossible to pill. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | Your vet sounds like a godsend! I am so sorry to hear of the pain Storm has been living with and will keep her in my prayers. I'm sure she'll be in all of our hearts Monday when she has her surgery and hope that she recovers from all of this relatively quickly and feels nothing but love from here on out. Sorry if I missed it, are you going to keep her or fostering her until you find her a home? She's so lucky to have you! |

I thought the same thing, I think she means give her a small bowl w multiple peices so she doesn't know which one the pill is in. |

| I'll try the bowl method. We had a disagreement this morning when she woke me up to go pee. Afterwards, she did NOT want to go back in her crate. She's stubborn, that's for sure. I know she has to be bored out of her mind in there, but they told me strict crate rest until the surgery and maybe for a week or two after (excepting physical therapy times). I can swing by tractor supply today and get her some toys or something to keep her occupied. Any suggestions on good ones to use? My girls don't do toys, unless I give them a tennis ball and it only lasts about 5 minutes til they destroy it.
As much as I'd like to keep her, we're probably just a foster family until she gets healthy enough to go on to a good home. My husband isn't nuts about the idea of adding a third dog to our pack when our first two still don't get along and have to be separated. Although, turns out my rescue friend trains dogs, so she is going to come and help me with those two. If I can get them getting along, he might think about it. I'm not sure she'd work for us anyway because she seems pretty adamant about staying in the house, and our girls are outside girls. If I could find her a home where she could live inside with her owners, I think she'd be happiest there. She seems to have a lot of separation anxiety, whereas my girls are both headstrong and independent. I'll have to be careful about how I go looking for a new family for her because I don't want her previous owner to get wind of it at all. We did technically steal her after all, lol. |
