Char's first camping trip Empty
PostSubject: Char's first camping trip   Char's first camping trip EmptySun Aug 26, 2012 9:52 pm

Well our family just got back from a 7 day camping trip to Prince Edward Island. I was nervous to go with a 4 month old Char, but everything went really well. He loved camping and was so good. Our only mishap was about 30 minutes after arriving at the campground. I had taken Char for a walk while my husband set up the tent. When we got back I went in the tent to get things set up. My husband calls me to come out and I'm thinking I'm busy what is so important. He yells for me to get out quickly. When I get out I see Char's muzzle is all swollen. He was being so quiet and just sniffing the air. I guess he was stung when he grabbed a flower on our walk. He never made a sound, I had no clue. I ended up calling an emergency vet as it was Sunday afternoon, and we were far from any vet anyway. Luckily the campers next to us had some Benadryl and I gave him a dose of that. All the swelling was on the top near his nose and his throat and lower jaw seemed fine. Thankfully he was his normal self by the next morning. It was scary though and I will make sure Benadryl is part of my first aid kit from now on. When the vet finally called me back ( I had already given him the Benadryl at this point) he said that Reactine would be better, but I really couldn't find any info on it online. just wondering if any of you have heard of using or have used Reatine for this type of thing.

this was after he was stung, hard to see it but it was twice the size it normally is.

This beach had so much seaweed, Char loved it he dug like crazy, wasn't as impressed with the ocean though.

He loved the little dog park they had at the campground. Unfortunately he didn't get to play with any dogs.

Scary!
Glad you had a good camping trip and the swelling went down.
Glad the benadryl worked.
What was the dose that the vet recommended?
I've got in my 1st aid kit, because I'm allergic to bee stings.

My first husky was stung under similar conditions.
I didn't even know it had happened.
Then his eye swelled shut and puffed up to the size of a lemon.
The vet gave him a shot. I don't remember what it was.

Doesn't it seem like the bad things always happen at the beginning of a vacation? I'm glad the rest of the trip went well. Char has a beautiful color pattern btw. Smile
