My name is Megan, and I live in Ohio, USA. I'm an 18 year old part time cashier, which I will be switching out my job to go to college this spring. So yeah, by now I may seem normal. But you know I'm crazy, because you all know since I'm on this forum that this was coming: I'm getting a husky puppy. I currently own a 5 month american eskimo, and he hates not having anyone to play with while at home. So naturally, I've decided to get him a playmate, which is going to be Yuki, a 5 week old siberian husky. I've already put the deposit down on her (3 weeks ago) and have been anxiously waiting to pick her up on the set date: September 4th. My friend who has two huskies recommended me to this site, and seeing as I read everything I can on Siberians, it's definitely gonna help. So yeah, here's Yuki at 5 weeks (Got the pictures from the breeder today)

Congrats on your new pup and welcome to the forum!! So correct me if I'm wrong but the puppy will be 6 weeks when you bring her home? Pups are supposed to stay with their moms until at least 8. Can the breeder keep her a little longer?

I questioned that myself, but unfortunately the 4th is the latest I could put it off to. Even if I fought to keep her there, it wouldn't help much because all the other pups would be gone to their homes. Luckily I've heard that 6-8 weeks is a lot of sibling playing/learning/socialization, and since I have my 5 month old pup she can play and learn from him. Although the pups do come home early, I like the breeders in the conditions they keep their huskies in are clean and fair, they offer their pups plenty of exercise in a huge grassy area, and mainly, it's not a puppy mill. XD

| Welcome to the Forum! you will learn heaps from being on this site and talking to some of the other experienced owners here. Pups learn a lot of their socialising skills and manners from their litter mates and mum from 6 weeks and up. Up until 6 weeks they are really still developing, it is not a compulsory thing that they must stay with their mum until they are 8 weeks, but it definitely does help, and most breeders should keep them until that age (i know not all do). Just make sure you give some extra attention to socialising, bite inhibition and a few other things that she would of otherwise learnt from litter mates and mum(i hope that makes sense). Having the 5month old pup will definitely be a help and there are a few people on here who got their pups at 6weeks (some younger) who i am sure would have some helpful advice and be willing to share their experiences.
But all that aside, she is an absolute Cutie! It looks like she has one blue, one brown eye is that correct? Adorable, congratulations on the new pup! (probably should of put that up the top of the post) |

Gonna subcategorize the answers here XD Yuki: Yes one brown one blue -is- correct. I originally told myself I was going to get a both blue eyed husky, but I fell in love with her, what can I say! (It's really funny, both parents have blue eyes, but she got a recessive gene of the two-colored eyes somehow.) Being Six Weeks: Thanks for all that advice! As I said before, I already have one dog. My 5 month pup never bites, rarely barks, and is house trained so I think he will be a good model for little Yuki. But knowing her she'll be stubborn and decide not to play follow the leader tehe! Forum: Thanks for the welcome! I felt that I needed to learn all I could, and the 'breed tendencies' off of Wikipedia isn't gonna help much. With this I get live feedback from people who actually own huskies so its nice to know that I have help raising my puppy (kinda) XD I think thats everything..

An ethical breeder will not release a pup at 6 weeks. I am sur eyou are already in love with him, but do some research on this forum about Back Yard Breeders - this will make a huge impact on your decisions when buying a puppy in the future. It's a problem because he will likely be more work when it comes to biting and nipping - you will have to work very diligently. It can be done, but there are already do many things that come with raisign a puppy, why add one more? What part of Ohio are you in? I am in Michigan and could help you in the future if you want to get into contact with ethical breeders. Congrats on the addition

Thanks for the info and help ^-^ I'm in southwest ohio, between Columbus and Cincinatti ish. It's a she by the way (everyone seems to think her markings look like a male LOL) And I'm pretty patient with training, they're not pups for forever so why try to rush it ^-^

Kale and I welcome you from California I got Kale at 5 weeks, and boy let me tell you, he was a handful. His manners were disgraceful, his puppy biting was pretty severe, and he was underdeveloped due to intestinal parasites and poor nutrition (possibly taken from his mom at 4 weeks, ill never know). BUT with a HUGE amount of time, patience and dedication, he turned out to be an outstanding dog. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people on this forum who have have years and decades more experience than I, so you're in good hands

Thanks for the post! That gives me hope <3 I know Cloud has always been the perfect pup, except for his energy and play level, you'd think he was a fully trained adult. So that's why I'm like O_O with Yuki, because I know she's gonna be a handful. Kale looks LOVELY, you did a great job!

No they aren't pups forever, so cherish it and enjoy it as much as you can! As many above have said there are plenty of people here to call on when you need help, and there may even be some who are close by who can help in a more hands on sense if you need it. Have fun with your pup, they don't stay that small for very long! She will be stubborn (it comes with the territory of a Husky) but you just have to make sure that you are just as (if not more) stubborn. Compton, Brooklyn, Halli and i have had various Mexican stand offs when i have asked them to do something and they don't want to do it, they give in eventually.

I couldn't imagine not having 3 huskies, it does get a bit insane but we have adapted to it. Mornings are great ! haha, they wake up as soon as an alarm goes off. They will be ever so quiet and sleeping up until they hear my alarm, once they hear the alarm that is it (sucks when you set the alarm for an earlier time then you need), it is get up or get jumped on, licked and whined at, you don't stand a chance of going back to sleep. I tried hiding under the blankets but they soon worked out that they could get to me by digging the blanket off me, poking their noses into holes and lifting it up or woo wooing and moaning as loud as they can until i or my partner give in and wake up.

Thanks! When I went to the breeder she was the one I randomly picked to hold, I loved her markings and even though she didn't have both blue eyes like the parents, I still adore her. Although the single stripe down the right side of her face is kind of weird, gonna have to wait and see what that turns into as she grows up lol.

Thanks! And Robin, how do you guys get the little rulers with the puppy that say like 'Cally is 8 months' whatever o.o I can't figure out how to get one of those. I figured you put it under your signature, but how to get the actual age-tracking thing I don't know.

What a gorgeous little girl! Congrats- I bet you are super excited to bring her home! I got my husky mix, Maya, at 7 weeks, which was a little young, but I remained patient and consistent and it definitely paid off! I had concerns bringing her home a week early, but with the advice of some friendly experts, I was able to overcome the difficulties that come with such a young baby. Anyway, as long you educate yourself and remain consistent, hopefully everything will go smoothly. Good luck!

Ah thanks! I think I saw your thread with pictures of that cute little one, she is SO CUTE! And I've been reading almost every site that has information on huskies and flipping through any husky books at the pet store, but I don't think I'll ever be prepared. Tehe!
