PostSubject: broken toenail   broken toenail EmptyWed Aug 22, 2012 6:06 pm

CJ just broke her toenail running out the back door. She bled all over the porch and me while I was trying to stop the blood. I was so freaked out by how much it bleeds. I got it stopped by putting flour on it and sent my husband for some stop quick. I have a vet appt made for tomorrow. Should I try to bandage it somehow? Or leave it be. Does anyone have ideas on what the vet might do for it? They mentioned maybe pulling the whole nail out. She doesn't act like it hurts but it must hurt right? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you!

I deal with this all the time with my girl Dalmatian! Her nails are so brittle ...

I freaked out the first time too! What I do now is just throw some corn starch on it, neosporin, wrap is gauze and vetrap bandage. I make sure its clean before I do any of that!

Those sound like good options! Does the toenail just heal up on it's own then?

Yep, it grows right back. Don't bandage it too tight, you don't want the foot to swell.

I would cancel the vet apt. if I were you. They are going to do the same thing I just told you and save you $60+. It's up to you though Smile

Glad she's alright, its so annoying that they pretend like nothings happened, how are we supposed to know the extent of pain they're in?!

Thanks for the great advice! I made the appointment just because it was broken so far down on the toe right next to whet the fur starts. My vet does not charge me for the visit just for the supplies because we have a sugar glider rescue and are always at the vet. But what you said. makes perfect sence. This is our first dog so we freak out and worry a lot.

My greyhound broke his toenail off past the quick, way past! IT bled so bad I thought I had a crime scene in the room! I did take him to the vet and I was glad I did, that kind of a toenail is VERY painful for the dog. And if part of the nail is left sometimes it can break again. My vet grinded the nail down so it was somewhat even, put antibiotics on his nail, cushioned it with lots of guaze, then vetwrapped it. He also put him on an oral antibiotic so it didn't become infected. he had to go have it rewrapped once a week for 2-3 weeks.

They can become infected. I would let the vet see it at least for the first time!

That's awesome! If that's the case then I'd take her in if you're really worried about it.

Pretty cool you have a Sugar Glider rescue. I got one a few year's back, they are bad ass! Our's was pretty mean unfortunately. I bought her as a joey from a shop in NY (had her flown into DCA) and ended up with an unsocialized female teenager with a bad attitude instead. Tried for year's to get her to bond with us! She had a Sugar Glider mansion (big wide & tall cage) with tons of toys, fleece stuff, different beds, wodent wheel, gliderade, fresh fruits/veggies/mealworms, etc. She just crabbed at us constantly and would "bark" at night for other gliders and it broke my heart. I found a guy like 15 minutes from my house that had a family of Glider's, so he welcomed her in. I'd like to eventually get a pair in the future, but not for a while. They are really neat creatures! Smile

Hayden that is awesome! They truly are great creatures. Attitudes vary for sure. We have eight total right now and they all have a cage mate that makes a difference for sure. I have some that come out and play and others that try to bite your fingers off. That little bark is so sad when they are lonely! The dog doesn't. Even notice them she is funny.

Update: We took CJ in to the vet this morning she ended up needing surgery to fix the nail and coterize the end of it. She now has the cone of shame. Poor girl! She's home now and doing well but still super drugged. Glad my vet gives a discount though! This is her 3rd visit in 4 months.

Clear back to the fur. Right where the nail starts. She had damaged it before but the vet thought it would be ok. Two weeks later she broke it off. There was so much blood when she did it I thought she was gonna die. I'm so happy that she did ok with anesthesia!

I am very glad that you took her in! They can lose a lot of blood, which is not good! Glad she is ok!
