Hi there,

We adopted a husky mix two weeks ago and he has quite a severe overbite. Approximately one inch. I have read everything I can find about it, but a lot of the information seems to be conflicting. We are making him an appointment at the vet, but I'd be curious to know if anyone has seen anything like this before and what happened as the puppy aged. Thanks! (I do have pictures, but can't figure out how to attach them)

I wouldn't be too concerned as long as it does not affect his health or his ability to eat. Definitely get your vet's opinion.

One of my chis has a very overshot bite. Not as bad as your adoptee but still enough that her mouth is left somewhat open. It doesn't affect her health or eating so it doesn't matter but she does "leak" out of her mouth ALL the time because it is left open, just a minor annoyance though.

Now... no one is allowed to tell Koda I posted these. He's VERY self-conscious about his overbite... but yes... Koda has an overbite. He's never had a problem with it except that it might have affected his breathing (he also has a deviated septum). We think his whole snout formed wrong. However, he's a totally normal husky. He doesn't eat very cleanly... he slobbers water everywhere... but it hasn't stopped him from tracking and killing chipmunks and rabbits in our yard. So, moral of the story is I wouldn't worry about it:

I really wish I knew what Koda was thinking as you were holding his snout like that and taking pictures! Razz

He had his ears back going "Aww, Ma... not again!" We show off his overbite to people cause we think it's cute. He, on the other hand, is very embarrassed by it!

Thank you so much for showing me those pictures of Koda!! (I won't tell him you posted them) Smile That really gives me hope for Findlay's adult teeth, which should start to emerge in a couple of months. We have a vet appointment on Friday so we'll see what they say. I'm worried they'll say they want to extract his lower teeth, which seems to be some people's experience with this. Do Koda's lower canines close up a ways behind his upper ones? Findlay's lower canines have carved out a bit of a channel in his upper gums, but they haven't penetrated them or caused any infection. Thankfully they're angled out. The problem is that he has trouble picking things up (including his food) which can be kind of heartbreaking to watch. But physically it's kind of cute. We call him little sharky face.

His lower teeth have definitely cut into the roof of his mouth. We've had it checked out by a few vets and the consensus has been: if it's not paining him or bothering him, don't worry about it. That would be my suggestion to you because some vets can get a little preachy on needing to fix everything. My experience has been not to fix what isn't broken. But it's your call Smile

I totally agree with the whole "don't fix what's not broken" thing. Let's just hope nothing's broken. I think I'll get several vet opinions. And I'm pretty sure he's not in any immediate danger. I'm just concerned with how his adult teeth will come in. The internet is full of horror stories. I should stop googling it. I feel a lot more relieved now that I've seen the pictures of Koda though. Big thanks!
