Hi all! Bruce has apparently been swallowing and not chewing the treats we give him or even his food sometimes... I'm worried that's why he's having tummy problems now.
For foodI'm feeding him the blue buffalo wilderness for puppies and for treats her likes the my little wolf in any flavor as well as a couple of treats from blue buffalo. They are all soft treats, so if I used crunchy treats instead do you think would help the problem?

Anybody have any problems like this?

My Cali will swallow her treats whole, its annoying. It doesn't effect her at all since she is soon to be 6 years old. I am not sure if it would cause issues in Bruce though, but I am by no means an expert in huskies. I do wish you the best with him and this concern. I would break up the treats if you can to limit the risk of choking.

It's not really a problem, a lot of dogs swallow their treats and kibble whole...if I had to guess, I'd say probably the majority of dogs do it to some extent. I know my whole pack does and it doens't matter if it is soft or hard food. What makes the different, at least in my pack, is the size of the food. If it's too big to swallow then they chew, if it's small enough to swallow then they swallow it whole...simple really and not uncommon.

Yeah, a lot of dogs don't chew their food or treats. Just one look at a dog throwing up kibble will tell ya! Looks almost the same as it did going in! lol.

I guess I'll just have to look for kibble that has larger pieces. I'm feeding him blue wilderness right now. Does anyone have any other recommendations for larger pieces in the kibble? And I'm trying to train him right now so I break up his treats to make them last longer but I guess maybe that's making him swallow them. Any suggestions for good training treats also?

For training you want to keep the treats small and soft so they are easy to swallow! You don't want your dog taking forever to chew a treat before going on to the next thing. If you want him to really chew his food, look into feeding raw. I don't think you'll find a kibble he won't just swallow and that's not really anything to worry about.

Ok thanks! Yeah the treats he gets now are soft and moist. I just felt bad he didn't chew lol
I was thinking about raw so maybe I'll end up switching to that.

My girl is the exact same way with her food, its more like she inhales rather than actually eating it. There have been a few post-upset tummy times we've found a big clump of undigested kibble that has made a second appearance. Oddly enough her doggy biscuits and beggin strips will be chewed until there's nothing left of them. I'm still trying to find a way to get her to chew food better, we tried the large object in the bowl to get her to slow down but nothing seems to work

Their stomach acid is so incredibly strong that it digests bones.
I dont think soft treats would be any problem for him or his tummy.

As others have said, it's more about the size of the treat. If he feels he can swallow it whole, he will do so. If he needs to chew it down to a size he can then swallow it he will do that too.

Freya eats small treats whole. But if I give her bones to chew on she will chew on them until their either bits fall off for her to then swallow, or she's gotten it down to a comfortable size for her to then swallow whole. I worried about it to begin with but I just watched her BMs closely. Sometimes there is litte bits of bone in them, but usually not.

For training we use Zuke's Mini Naturals. Bode loves them. We even cut them in half to maximize them and so he doesn't over eat. I think they smell a little nasty, but that doesn't matter too much.
