Hey everyone,

I am a soon to be new husky owner. I've loved huskies for as long as i can remember and have been doing research on them for a few years now, but i know research can only go so far until you actually have the dog

The husky I am getting is a rescue. He is about 1.5 years old. I will be getting him in roughly 3 weeks when i move into my new house. I met him over the weekend and loved him right from the start. The rescue did mention how calm he was for his age, and they were right. He was very well behaved, very calm/mellow and seemed very loving. Spent about an hour and half getting to know him. Once we left, he was very good...didn't whine at all (until one of the other huskies started whinging/howling) then that got him going haha.

As of now he knows many basic commands (sit, stay etc) He is house trained and crate trained, however the person at the rescue that works with him said she would continue doing more crate training.

few questions i did have:

Even with great crate training, can i still assume there will be some whining/crying at first when bringing him into the new house into the crate? I've read the crate training thread on here, but would anybody have any other tips/opinions on how to get him used to the crate in a new "area"

I see that most say "crate will be your best friend" which i can see it trust from a lot of the stories i've read on here, however what are people's opinions on keeping the husky out of the crate at night and in a dog bed of some sort in the same room and have him sleep there at night? is that really not recommended or does it really depend on the dog and how he acts in general?

Any other suggestions or opinions for a new husky owner would be greatly appreciated as I will be new to this breed

Mine were crated at night when they were young, but now they either sleep on the "dog" porch where they can't really get into any trouble or in our bedroom with us and we have to fight over who gets to sleep where. lol. We humans always win, but oh you should see the looks they give us when we push them off the bed!

You'll get to know what your guy is like and see if he's a big chewer or not. I still don't trust mine alone in the house when we're gone, but I do trust them in our bedroom when we're asleep and when they're in the house with us and out of sight. At least I can usually hear what they're doing!

Congrats on the adoption! I'm sure he'll be perfect! Don't forget to share pics of him!

Crating your dog is all dependent on how your dog behaves when given the freedom of not being crated when you can't pay immediate attention to their actions. I have never crated my dogs at any point during the day even as puppies and I can say with full confidence that I don't have to worry when they're out and I'm not around. All I can say is with him seeming more mellow, you could chance living him out at night and see how he does. Just don't send him to bed with pent up energy to be safe. I don't really think huskies are really any difference than any other dog that is not a super lazy breed. They're perfectly capable of being uncrated, it will require training and making sure they are not bored and under stimulated, and possibly need to be a few years old (I know most people start feeling more comfortable with dogs outside crates by 3-4 years).

I'd think you'd experience some whining as he will be in a new and unfamiliar place. I think that'd make anyone anxious. I'd just give him a few days to adjust to the changes and keep the crate a positive place (randomly leave a few treats in there for him to find, feed him in there, give him a filled kong in there). I've had dogs crated in my care when fostering for a day or two til the adopting family is ready (death row dogs) in the past and some did just fine and didn't cry.

Welcome, and congratulations! We started letting Dalton roam at night when he was about 7 months, and haven't had any problems. During the day, he's not crated, but we do keep him "confined" to an area of the house where he can't get into too much trouble.

I imagine, as others have said, there may be a bit of whining at night before he has adjusted to the new house, schedule, people, smells, etc.
