How to make moving less stressful... Empty
PostSubject: How to make moving less stressful...   How to make moving less stressful... EmptyThu Aug 02, 2012 12:38 am

So, I'm finally getting to move for school and I'm so excited for it, but I want to make it easy on Ava. We're only moving about 1.5-2 hours from home, but still. School started this week and I've been driving it so far since I can't get a van to move my stuff until this weekend, so Ava's already acting a little off since I'm never home lately. Plus she gets concerned when I'm packing - especially when I packed the extra leashes and treats How to make moving less stressful... 1625187496

We're going from really really rural to a nicer part of the city - about a block from the capital building and all the offices and such. There's plenty of places to walk and other dogs, but no woods or anything like she's used to. It'll just be us, so she won't have Snickers to play with or my mom's kitten to chew on and I really hope that she doesn't develop separation anxiety or anything like that. My classes aren't super long (3-4 hours most nights, 5 hours one night, and I get a three day weekend) and she can come with me sometimes. Plus I literally live 5 minutes away from school, so I don't have to factor in commute time - like yesterday when I spent 4 hours driving and 3 hours in class. Ack.

I just don't want her to be miserable or anything. I understand that it'll probably be hard for the first few days (weeks?), but I want to make it as easy as possible. On Mondays and Tuesdays, my dad is off and he says he wants to come over and "visit," and bring Snickers (depending on how he does with the stairs), then she would be on her own for a few hours on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and then I'll be off on Fridays. There's a doggy daycare about 15 minutes away and I think its all indoors, so do you think I should look into that? I'm going to have all of her familiar stuff at the apartment and I'm going to use Rescue Remedy and another herbal mix if she needs it too. I also thought about a Thundershirt, but of course, we're out of the ones that are her size. I also wanted to take her to visit and get accustomed to it beforehand, but that part isn't working out so well. Is there anything else I can do, preparation-wise??

I worry too much How to make moving less stressful... 1625187496

We have moved 4 times in the last 3 months, one of which being cross country. She has had no issue from place to place. When we take her into a new place we keep her on her leash (in the house) and show her every room, let her sniff and feel comfortable in a room before moving onto the next. The whole process usually takes about an hour. Then we take her outside and only walk a certain area/path way every time for a few days, we gradually increase the distance and amount of new places we show her. Hope this helps!

Congrats on the move! I would recommend getting a D.A.P. diffuser. I've heard really good things with their success when changing the dog's environment. I'd also try to keep her routine as similar as you can and set up a similar home setup. (AKA, if her bed was in the bedroom before, do the same). If she really misses playing with other animals I'd definitely look into the doggy daycare. But see what kind of play they get. A LOT of the doggy daycares I've seen in WV don't allow the dogs to play with each other due to liability reasons. They only get walked/played with by the people. So it might not be worth the expense if that is the case. Otherwise I'd try to schedule play dates/dog park visits so she can get some of the inter-animal play she might be missing. Or you know... get a second husky Very Happy

Good Luck!
