Names Shea and I'm from South East Texas area.
I was told about this forum by one of your members who I recently befriended on FB. Just want to say that I love these dogs and have always wanted to own a few my whole life just never had the ability to. I also like the Akita breed but the husky took the cake :]
Just here to gain as much knowledge as possible and maybe meet some new friends before I take on this awesome responsibility! I do realize though that actually doing something is more beneficial than studying forever so I'm hoping to have my new buddy very soon.

Welcome Shea and kudos to you for doing your research on the breed. True, all the research in the world may not completely prepare you for this breed but it certainly is good to have a very good idea. Reminds me of myself before I got my sibe. There were no dedicated husky forums and I researched the breed for 5 years prior to adopting one. And I was completely thrown for a loop when I finally had a sibe in my home. This forum is a great resource, wish it was around before I got my sibe. Smile

Hello from sapphira and I! Smile
I'm glad you're doing your research before taking on the responsibility. A sibe can be a lot to handle if uneducated about the breed. But if shown the right direction and given the right guidence mixed with a lot of patience you'll do just fine.
I did my research before buying my baby girl and let me tell ya all the research in the world just doesn't do any justice until you actually own one. With that being said I look forward to seeing your future sibe! Smile
I love you

Thanks for the welcome you guys Smile
Waiting 7 more months is going to be torture but worth it in the end. I really wanted to be financially grounded before I took on any kind of pet just so I wouldn't run the risk of having to give them up if something happens. Should be starting my new job (paying a lot more) in the next few months and my lease at this apartment is up in Feb.

Do you guys know of any respected breeders in my area? I had a girl come in one day to pick up parts her dad had ordered and she had her pup named Asher with her. It took me half an hour to let her leave. lol She gave me the number of a lady named Amy Cantrell and said Asher was the last one left so she drove to Dallas to pick him up. Wish I could've held him.. love how they're little fur-balls in the puppy stage haha

Are you guys like me and spend hours looking a youtube videos of these guys??? Shocked

Thanks Smile
I have thought about that just haven't looked into it yet. I'd hate to find one and not be in the position to save it Sad
Around this time last year my ex did find a husky on the side of the highway and immediately scooped him up. He was beautiful and I can't understand how someone could lose him like that. No offense to anyone who has lost their sibe before. I just know he was showing ribs, covered in mud and fleas so it was obvious the owner didn't care. He cleaned up nice after a few baths and we spent the following weeks getting his weight back up . We were really attached but I'm almost 100% sure someone ended up stealing him. She had roommates with loser druggy friends so I'm sure they did it.

Ugh, that always makes me mad to hear when someone steals dogs, and really the only advice I can give is to always keep an eye on your pup as much as possible, but I'm sure you already knew that Smile People steal huskies here in South Dakota too, so I definately know that paranoid feeling (I think everyone does), but don't let it hinder you on your decision. Hopefully that woman and her loser friends are long gone out of the picture so you don't have to worry about that anymore though Sad

Heya Shea! I'm in Corpus, but Texas none the same.

I know there is a breeder in Edroy, BUT, if you are willing to rescue, Texas Husky Rescue ALWAYS has gorgeous babies that need to be saved. They even have puppies from time to time. I know a few people who have used them to adopt, and they haven't been disappointed!

They also have the Houston Husky Rescue, and I believe one other SH rescue in Texas Smile

Is there a specific reason you want to use a breeder? Just curious Smile

Welcome. My sister lives in Lake Jackson, TX. She tells me Houston has very high kill shelters with huskies there all the time. Just a quick look on petfinder revealed several.

Husky Haven in Houston is a great husky rescue.

: ( I wish I could take Bono and Winter home TODAY. I knew I shouldn't have looked.

About the breeder, I just like the idea of bringing a puppy home but if I can provide some of these guys a good home I would much rather do that, Thanks for the links btw. I think I know what I'm going to do now. Smile

Welcome, Shea! wave AP1? You have an S2000? Wink

Great job doing the research early, I highly commend you for this. Many people get into husky ownership without adequate research and huskies ARE not ordinary dogs. Wink Getting a husky is a lifestyle, almost a hobby.

This forum is an awesome source of info with supportive members, we'll do what we can do help you! Smile I definitely understand dying to have a husky, it took us months to find our perfect first husky and all I wanted was to come home to some husky hugs every day. Smile In the meantime, if you have a few hours a week - it's a great time to volunteer with a rescue and spend some time having fun with huskies! That way, you get to know different personalities of huskies and see what best fits your lifestyle. As a single household in an apartment with a full time job, a husky 4 years or older that's a bit more mellow will be a great fit!
