| Hi everyone, Just today, my cousin decided to surprise me with a gorgeous husky puppy. While I am extremely excited, the puppy is only 5 weeks old and he has already taken him from his mother. Since earlier today I've been trying to tell him the importance of a puppy being with its mother for at least 8 weeks. I'm really excited and yet really afraid of what might happen because he's only 5 weeks old. I am currently trying to get him to give back the husky to the breeders so they can at least keep him with his mothers and pups for at least another 3 weeks. Another big problem is that he's bought the husky in another country, so i cant really do much from here. What should I do? What should I tell him to feed him? I am going crazy right now doing research and finding out that it's extremely dangerous for him to have taken the puppy so soon. If I can't get the puppy back to his mother, is it ok for the puppy to be with other dogs/pups that aren't huskies? |

| Although, it is very important that the husky be with it's siblings and mother till at least 8 weeks of age, it is very dangerous for one so young to be around strange dogs and puppies so young! Wait till he has had ALL of his shots to prevent any illnesses or diseases that can cause harm to your pup. Since he was taken so young, there can be problems pop up as he gets older like him nipping, socialization issues, and guarding issues. It's probably going to be more difficult since he was bought out of the country...Yet, do not let this discourage you. With a ton of patience, consistency, and training he can be a very well behaved dog. We are all here to help and give out any info and support that is needed What made him buy one out of the country? ETA: We have a member on here that had her puppy from 5 weeks, and he has turned out to be a great dog! Just don't give up on him. You need to know that he is a puppy, and not all puppies are easy no matter the breed or age. We would love to see pics of the little guy! |

| Thanks for the help, I read the article and thanks for the hope. He knew that I had been looking for Husky puppies in Costa Rica, he lives there, and he decided to surprise me with him.. My family is currently there on vacation and the puppy will be coming back with them in a few weeks. The puppy will be 8-9 weeks when they come back and bring him to me. I uploaded photos, he's the one on the left. So first step should be to take him to the vet and not let him come in contact with anything or other dogs? What about food, is it ok to feed him dog food from the pet store now, or does he need some type of special food?

| Aww, he's adorable!
Definitely don't let him contact any dogs or surfaces in the vet's office because young puppies are really susceptible to Parvo, and there have been several big outbreaks here in the States this spring and summer. It's been bad where I live in FL. And yes, the first thing you should do is take him to get examined by the vet.
As far as food goes, you should be fine feeding him normal kibble, but definitely research and find a higher quality one. www.dogfoodadvisor.com is a great resource, and if you search around here there are tons of threads on nutrition and different foods. Be prepared though, a lot of Huskies have really sensitive tummies, so you may well have to go grain free with your boy.

| If you're in the US and your family is bringing the dog back here, please see these guidelines to avoid the dog being put into quarantine in a kennel when they come back: http://www.cdc.gov/animalimportation/dogs.html |

| Thanks, ill make sure to let my cousin know to avoid other dogs. Also, if im reading this correctly, puppies can't get vaccinated for rabies until they're at least 3 months old? So how can I make sure that my husky won't get confined to a quarantine? |
