PostSubject: How do you train a husky when everyone is against you?   How do you train a husky when everyone is against you? EmptyThu Jul 05, 2012 1:48 am

Hello! I have a beautiful 13 month old husky and am having a few troubles training him. We where almost to the point of breaking his jumping on new people thing he does, but then people keep encouraging it! I tell them we don't want him jumping on people because for ever 1 person that is okay with it 20 others are not, but they are no help. They just keep encouraging it! I feel like I should just not allow those people over anymore! I just don't want it to come to that. It's the saddest thing having to put him in the crate because people are over. So what do you think I should do? Also can I still train him not to jump after being allowed to for so long?[right]

If they aren't respecting your process then they really aren't respecting you in the end. Joking or not this is beyond rude.

I would be livid too....

Sounds like a cliché, but they can't respect what you are trying to do then I wouldn't have them over until you had fixed the behaviour if you can. I know it is harsh but why should Vegas be punished for something they are egging on.

If it is just people who are saying "It is ok, I don't mind when your dog jumps on me.... Your pup is sooooo cute", then just explain to them that No it's not ok. And prompt a sit and go through it all.

Despite the old saying... Yes you can teach an old dog new tricks. It just takes a lot more time breaking a behaviour then it does training a new one. Keep at it, be firm, and fair and eventually you should break through.

I usually tell people to not encourage him and to wait till he stops before praising him. Family and close friends of mine know this and will tell others they bring over.

Those who don't listen I tell them to not touch my dog if they don't listen to that, I like to tell them to leave the room or I escort them out of the room and let them know that they can only come back if they are ready to behave (Its people training lol).

It makes me come off like a bit of an a$$ but I'm willing to pay that price to teach my pup good manners.

I completely understand where you're coming from! This crazy lady at the dog park (who doesn't have a dog, just comes because she's nuts) does this too and drives me crazy! She let's Nicky jump on the bench with her, sit in her lap, lick her face, and even calls her by a nickname she gave her! All horrible habit's I don't allow my dog's to do. I have to constantly correct this girl and if she still does it I will move to the other side of the dog park or will end up leaving.

If someone came to my house and didn't follow my house rules, I would tell them to not touch my dog, like Jordan said. I wouldn't say it in a nice playful "haha *fake smile* don't do that *in a low voice*". I would have a serious tone and face and tell them politely yet firmly "I'm training my dog, please don't encourage him jumping". If they insist it's ok, give a friendly reminder "No, it's not. I would prefer him to stay down".

If you're house guests can't respect the rules of you're house then they deserve to have a refresh. Just stay calm and firm and all will be ok. It's the best in the long run for you're pup, so do it for his sake. Smile

I've found that the best bet is to give them a reason, whether it's true or not. Often, I blame kids. When someone says "No, it's ok, my dogs do this all the time," respond with, "He/She jumped on my nephew and knocked him down, so I'm trying really hard to make sure he doesn't hurt any kids."

I know you shouldn't have to lie like that, but many people think you're taking away the dog's fun and being too strict in your training, when you won't let them jump up. If you play along like you don't want to have to do it, but since it's for the safety of children, you have to, people tend to be more understanding.

I know exactly what you mean! It makes it so hard to teach no jumping when someone goes and encourages a dog for it - and it happens so often.

Can you recruit a set of friends to help you with the training? If enough people in a row don't let him jump, it will sink in and he will have learned it. Also, it will help if you can try to proof it against distractions, because there are probably some circumstances in which he is more likely to jump than others (because he's got excited). If you can build up to those situations gradually, that will help too.

I agree with everyone else that sometimes you just have to tell other people how to interact with your dog. I've done that before too; people can be a bit surprised but they usually comply.

Thank you to everyone that replied! You are all right and I will start training him again starting today! It breaks my heart to see him in his crate during the day when there is no need for it. I will start looking for people to help me teach him, and for those people that keep egging him on if I have to I will come up with something to tell them so they can understand why I am training him! Again thank you all very much!

beautiful dog! if he is anything like my dog you'll have your hands full with the most energetic playful pup for the next few years i am sure! good advice already given...don't be afraid to tell someone else not to encourage bad behavior. if they take offense to that, then they aren't very diligent dog owners themselves, so who cares what they think. my boy used to do that, but with a little training to let him know it's not ok he doesn't anymore. other dog owners of well behaved awesome dogs all told me the same thing...if he jumps on you, give him a knee and a firm "NO". (that also transcends to learning the "no" command) Thankfully, only had to a few times, and now it's all hunky dory. He does still approach strangers with excitement often because he knows the probability of getting petted is high! Smile

Maybe asking them to help you with training when you talk to them on the phone prior to arrival may help? We've been teaching Frosti not to jump and we get the same thing "oh no! It's ok!". Sometimes people are just being polite- but I firmly say "No, it's not ok - it's bad manners and we're teaching her not to do it.". If she's too hyped up, I'll hold her back until the guests have been here for 5 minutes. By then, she's usually calm down and greets them politely. That has also helped with extinguishing the jumping behavior.

We also turn our backs to take away our attention when she does it, while saying no. Then we tell her to sit. We follow every "No" with an instruction on how we want her to behave.
