Kaiser is a thief. He takes toys, food, and everything else he can from Dante and Dante just allows it. When Dante tries to take it back, we go to take things away, he runs and/or will give a tiny little growl that so far a firm no will curb and he will let go of whatever he has. Today I gave Dante his chicken quarter and Kaiser stole it and ran under the bed. When my husband went to take the chicken away, Kaiser growled and bit him, drawing blood on my husbands hands (which have pretty thick skin). It's not a huge bite....but he certainly wasn't playing. What do I do about this?

Often times raw is viewed as higher value due to the amount of concentration and almost "intimacy" there is while eating it. They really have to work at it and get into a more "primative" state of mind. It's the best way to describe it anyway- people who are afraid of raw view it as "blood-thirsty"

I would begin (or restart) hand feeding Kaiser... Hold the meat and reinforce that you are the supplier of the food. If he's stealing food like that I would try and create some space and really watch him and Dante. Fights over food (especially raw) can be not so nice, especially when there is such a size difference.

Kristina pretty much hit the nail on the head - but I would like to add that you shouldn't scold a growl, ever. If you scold a growl - which is essentially a dogs only way to warn you that they don't like something and that a bite may be forthcoming - he will just start biting with no warning because you told him a growl (his only warning) is not allowed (The bite then becomes the warning) and that is far greater danger/risk than actually allowing it.

How is your husband taking it? We had a similar experience, but it was with Delilah and a Zukes bone. Thank god I had this forum. If you want I can post the thread, and maybe that would help your hubby deal with it, it helped mine. But, thats assuming he is upset.

Good luck - Hand feeding is a lot of work, but its worth it. Delilah had to do WEEKS of it, but now I can even put my hand in her bowl with raw (just did it tonight)

He actually took it really well, I told him I don't really think Kaiser intended to bite him and he agreed. He wasn't amused for a bit, but he doesn't seem to be holding it against the puppy thankfully.
