crate - Crate Recommendations? Empty
PostSubject: Crate Recommendations?   crate - Crate Recommendations? EmptySun Jun 24, 2012 6:14 pm

So we are picking up our new puppy in about a month and need to start getting supplies together. I'm looking for a sturdy crate with a divider so we only have to buy one for the lifetime. Do you use metal or plastic crates? I'm leaning towards metal, but it's hard to tell the sturdiness by just browsing online or with them being boxed up at the store. I'm hoping to spend around 130 or less, but would spend more if it gets a great crate. Thanks!

Oh, also: What size is good for a full grown husky. From the looks of the Dam and Sire, our puppy is going to be on the large side!

I prefer metal crates, because they are cooler and allow more air flow. I couldn't tell you what brand, etc, to get, because I've never PURCHASED one, they had been given to me. I have a precision though, and it's a welded crate that holds up to Rio (who chewed through her plastic crate in about 10 minutes)

I have one pink one for Miss thang, aka Cali that is 48" long and a black 48" long for Mika. I got them both for 60 a piece on craigslist. I also have a med size (36" long I think) and the large 42" long ones. The 36 long i got for only 20 bucks from a lady and Cali came with the 42". My girls were happy with 42" size one which is "Large". I upgraded to the two door ones that are 48" long due to more options on placement. It has a door on the long side. Mika lovers her new big crate, each day for breakfast and dinner she opens her door and then closes is in prep for her food to be served.

crate - Crate Recommendations? Empty
PostSubject: Re: Crate Recommendations?   crate - Crate Recommendations? EmptyWed Sep 26, 2012 12:12 pm

I ended up getting a pink crate for Callie. I hate pink but it's good for her. $54 on ebay with free shipping for a 42"x28"x28" crate with a divider so it can grow with her. I got it because she's a lab boxer mix and this crate was recommended for both breeds, but the thing is freaking huge! I don't think she'll ever be that big! I don't even think she's going to make it to her estimated 50lbs!

Anyway, the name brand is like Champion Dogs or something like that and if you have an escape artist, I wouldn't recommend it. I don't know if all crates are the same or if I just got a stupid one, but the slide latches on the doors just barely lock it. I don't know if I can explain this right but I'll try. You know how the slide latches are like a horizontal bar with a U like shape on it? Every crate I've ever had with these latches, that bar slid pretty far to lock the door. On this crate the end of the bar just barely reaches the lock. It closes it, but all it's going to take is Callie to figure out that if she jingles the door enough, or licks the handle to the side, she can easily get out. Luckily, I know my dogs are escape artists and we've got plenty of caribeener (sp?) clips on hand.

EDIT: I have figured out that if you play with it enough, the lock will slide all the way over so I am fixing this to say that I fully recommend this crate.
