PostSubject: No processed foods!   No processed foods! EmptyThu Jun 07, 2012 9:04 pm

Has anyone every tried to cut out processed foods out of their diet completely? I really want to give this a try. I don't want to just diet, I want to get healthy. I'm hoping that others have tried and can share tips on what worked for them and what didn't...

I haven't done it completely, but I'm absolutely working in that direction. It really hasn't been that difficult except for trying to work around Aaron's pickiness, but I noticed a difference almost immediately. The big thing you should do first, at least if you can afford it, is go for hormone and antibiotic free meat. We're really lucky with Publix here, because their Greenwise (organic) stuff is really reasonably priced. I also buy organic on a lot of the fruits and veggies I buy. My rule with that, at least what I'm trying to follow, is if I eat the skin I buy organic.

Does the meat package say it is hormone and antibiotic free? I have never paid attention to what was in foods before so this is going to be very new to me. Now that it is just me at home, it will be easier to spend more on the food. I figure I will be eating less anyway so it should even out some.

It should be labeled pretty clearly on the packaging. True organic meat is horribly expensive, but as long as it's hormone and antibiotic free you should be good to go. That's one of the reasons I wish we had Trader Joe's here, they have different grades of meat at different prices. I know there are several up in the Chicago area (my parents go to the Naperville one), there may be some downstate as well.

I've tried that, but it does get expensive.
Here in the land of Oz alot of our meat (chicken, pork, beef etc) is hormone free so thats always handy.
Our fruit and veggies though are really expensive if you want organic. And there isnt a huge range to pick from. Makes things difficult.

Same here, which is why I pick and choose. I don't worry too much about things like carrots, onions and bananas, but I buy organic celery and apples. That's what we eat the most of honestly, aside from that I kind of pick and choose when I need something specific.
