Hayden has this "thing" on both his elbows on his front legs. It's worse on the left side then it is the right. It doesn't appear to be a hot spot, because it's not bloody, wet, or open and he doesn't mess with it. I have touched it and it doesn't seem to bother him at all. It's hard and feels like rough callused skin. It can't be rug burn, because we have hardwood flooring. He does get on the couches, but not enough to cause this. We do go to the dog park a lot and it's not grassed in, it's more like a small rock/dusty/sand like. Anyone have a clue as to what this could be?

Though it was usually more on the elbow area, our dogs at my old work use to get those from laying on the concrete flooring all the time. The fur would be thinned and the spot would get rough and dry looking/feeling.

I called the vet and she thought the same thing until she realized he's 8-months and said that usually occurs in older dog's (over 2 years). So, we have an apt. on Tuesday. I'm so bummed it's my vet's last week of work Now I have to go on a search for a new vet, since I don't like any other one's in that office. Ahh ... it's so hard trying to find a good vet.

Please post when you find out, I have seen that on many dogs. Maybe its the hard flooring?

Mya used to get this from laying on the plastic tray in the crate. Actually, Asia is starting to develop it also.

Just about every dog I ever owned developed those "elbow calluses" at one time or another. Just about everyone of them cleared up very well when I used Bag Balm* on them. A little bit goes a long way and massage it in well and try to keep the pooch from licking it off so it helps the healing process.

Blaze has them on both front elbows. I used aloe on them and the hair mostly grew back, then after a while they start to show back up.

Good to know the fur will grow back! The tech I spoke to told me that once they are formed, they will always look like this and the hair will never grow back. I'll for sure look into purchasing the bag balm.

Yep, caused by pressure on hard floors. My sibe has had them before too and they've gone away on their own with no treatment whatsoever, all I did was offer him more blankets in his favorite spots on the hard floors to ease the pressure.

They can get to the point where there's only a scab and then they are too far gone to treat, but that's usually on older dogs. Both my girls have it too and I put, I think it's, baby skin cream on it, but haven't kept up with it enough to see results. The main thing that helped was when we finally started allowing them to sleep in the room with us (carpet and bed) and not out on the porch that had a hard floor which they usually lay on instead of the blankets out there. Guess they like the cool feeling of the hard floors.
