| Timber has been amazing so far, however today my oldest son Trenton (5years) went and tried giving him a hug. Timber was laying down and when Trenton bent down and hugged him timber nipped his face scared me to death! Iv been reading as much as I can and everything says "teach them the pack order" I completly understand this however how do I teach timber that the kids are above him? Also if this was your husky how would you have reacted? I was not quite sure what to do. Thank in advance for the advice |

| It's really important to teach kids how to behave around dogs as much as to teach the dog how to behave around kids.
There is a really useful video here on Dr Sophia Yin's website about how children should greet dogs. She also has a useful poster and other information here.
Most dog bites of young children happen in the home, when the child approaches the dog and interacts with it. So you should teach your children not to approach the dog - if they want to pet him, they should call the dog to them. Also, dogs generally don't like being hugged, so you can teach them how to pet the dog in a way that it likes.
Any dog should be supervised around young children.
It's not so much about learning the place in the pack as providing leadership for the dog and teaching it how to behave (pack theory for dogs is outdated). How is Timber around the kids at other times? You need to show her how to behave and reward her for good, calm behaviour around them.

| First I think I need to change my profile lol timber is male he is usually good with the kids. Doesn't really pay attention to them. He will walk up and "check" on them then walk off. He chases them when they play. Most of the time the kids and timber just leave eachother alone besides the little pet here and there, and somtimes they get to give him a treat. |

| How would you have handled the situation? How do I show timber that nipping at the kids is not a good habbit? |

| Oops sorry for getting the gender wrong! It sounds like most of the time he is fine with the kids, which is great. I would have told him no, which I am sure you did too, but you have to train the children as well as the dog so that it doesn't happen again. You can always use a pet gate to keep them separate when you can't watch them. The scenario you describe is unfortunately a very common situation for dog bites. I hope your son is okay. |

| Huskies especially, but most dogs in general, do not like to be hugged. It's a sign of being dominated in their world. Ghost had great advice when saying its how the kids interact more so than the dog. |

| You definitely need to teach Timber that the kids are above him. How? You can have the kids feed him. You can also make him move for humans. If he is laying there, say Timber move, (don't walk around him, he is not Alpha you are). Do the same for the kids. It sounds silly, but to dogs its all about who is Alpha, and everyone is Alpha above him!
I had a very very alpha female greyhound. If my kids went near her on her bed she would "air nip" them. I consulted a trainer, and he told me to make her move several times a day. She needed to learn that while it was her bed, it was also because I gave it to her. I moved the bed around, and I made her move. I also fed her food piece by piece, and so did my kids (my youngest was 8 though so yours may be young for this). She soon learned that while she was Alpha over my other greyhound, she was not alpha over human family members. She became a great dog!
Use NILF training, "Nothing in life is free" for everything he gets, he must work for it. Make him sit, wait, down, shake, anything you want to train him to do. And be sure to train him some everyday. They are incredibly smart and can learn anything. Make him work.
Balon loves to be hugged and loved on. By anyone in fact. Maybe I am lucky, I don't know. My vet keeps saying he is not the typical husky lol.
Good luck, be sure to always always supervise him around your kids! Thank god your son was not badly hurt. |
