PostSubject: TOTW - High Prairie Puppy or Pacific Stream?   TOTW - High Prairie Puppy or Pacific Stream? EmptyWed Apr 25, 2012 12:09 am

So I mentioned in a previous thread that I had Bella on Puppy Chow until it stopped working well for her. Made the switch to Blue Wilderness Puppy, only to find that with 12% more protein than puppy chow (38% vs 26%) the pup is off the wall, no longer sleeping through the night, has to pee constantly.

So we're going to switch to Taste of the Wild. Bella has really leaned out in the past few weeks. The High Prairie has 28% protein and 17% fat, and I think she needs a little more fat. Pacific Stream has 27% protein but only 15% fat. Small differences I know, but how about some opinions? Thanks!

We feed Pacific Stream here. I got sample packs from them when I was considering switching and we tried the High Prairie first. Ghost really liked it, but it gave her the most god awful, paint peeling farts. We never even opened the 2nd sample. Bella may be different though, so I'd suggest writing to them and asking for samples. The company is really good about it, and they'll arrive quickly.

affraid that will not do! Smile She sleeps under my desk for a while every morning. I would have to evict her!

Good advice on asking for samples. I just contacted TOTW through their website. Thanks

You're welcome! I hope it works out for you, and like I said Bella may not have the gas problems that Ghost did.

Bodhi eats TOTW Pacific Stream.
No gas!
My vet, who once owned a husky, is a big fan of fish in northern dogs' diets.
He said back in time their diet was primarily fish, and that they need it.
When I got him, Bodhi was on Kirkland dog food.
His coat is much more glossy as a result of the TOTW and the fish oil caps he gets 2X a day.

try the High Praire Canine. It's all life stages, but we use that and pacific stream, we just alternate.

High Praire:
Protein: 32% Minimum, Fat: 18% Minimum

We also have a puppy at 16 weeks and he LOVES the food and has good poops!

Probably can't go wrong with any of the TOTW product line but I'm also a Pacific Stream feeder. Northern breeds like fish.

Go with what works best for your dog. Each dog is an individual and will vary on how they do on any specific food. High Prairie contains heavier meats which is more likely to put on weight but it's up to you and your dog what you use. FWIW, my sibe cannot tolerate either High Prairie or Pacific Stream, he doesn't tolerate beef in kibble form and he doesn't tolerate fish in any form.

Kale is on High Prairie right now and I have experienced no odd smells or rumbles Razz Kale loathed Pacific stream and the Wetlands formulas, he would skip meals and when he did eat he'd eat a forth. His favorite is Sierra Mountain, and so far he scarfs the High Prairie as well. I guess it depends on what you pup likes and what they do well on. It's trial and error in the beginning; at least it was for me lol

When we were feeding TOTW, we had good results with the Sierra Mountain Recipe. Never noticed any gas issues on any of the offerings.

Thank you for starting this topic!

My two huskies are about to make a switch from Innova to TOTW. Yuki just isn't happy about Innova and eats only when she is hungry enough. I wasn't sure which TOTW to go with either and this thread really helped me out.

Thanks!

Hey gang,

My husband and I are attempting to switch Sierra to the TOTW PS, however, we are concerned about the "smoked salmon". Smoked meats are a carcinogenic to humans...what about puppies.

Sierra does seem to have more interest in the TOTW and we understand the importance of the fish oils for health.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sonora

Double check the Ca:P ratio for TOTW PS - for puppies it should be close to 1.5:1.

So I have to say Bella is loving the TOTW Pacific Stream puppy! I have never seen a coat this shiny on a husky. It is so soft and silky smooth. She is one happy puppy on this food.
I can't really complain about the price either. I saw a guy at the store on Saturday buying a 20 lb bag of some other kibble for $89. (Is it made from bald eagles and panda meat??? Laughing )

Did TOTW change their formula of their original ALS when their puppy formula came out? I'm a little concern as I have a 14month old Husky and a 2 month old Malamute. They are alternating between Pacific Stream and Sierra Mountain.

As Bella is still a puppy, should we concern about the CA:P ratio. I got this from another topic in this forum.
Small to medium breed puppies should have a ratio of Ca to P of 1.2:1 Large breed puppies should have a ratio of Ca to P of 1.5:1

TOTW Pacific Stream has Calcium: 1.9% and Phosphorus: 1.1%
So that makes a Ca:P ratio of 1.72:1 which is pretty high, hence it is better suited for adult dogs NOT puppies.

TOTW HIgh Prairie has Calcium: 2.1% and Phosphorus: 1.4%
That that makes a Ca:P ratio of 1.5:1 which is fine for large breed puppies.

TOTW Sierra Mountain has Calcium: 1.6% and Phosphorus: 1.0%
That that makes a Ca:P ratio of 1.6:1, starting to get a little high there.

TOTW Wetlands has Calcium: 2.1% and Phosphorus: 1.4%
That that makes a Ca:P ratio of 1.5:1 which is fine for large breed puppies.
