Hey guys, Orion (1 yr) has been blowing his coat like a normal husky for the past month or two, but it has always been clumpy, soft undercoat fur. Over the past couple days, I've noticed he is now shedding a lot of his guard hairs. Is this normal, or should I be concerned? He has a vet appointment tomorrow for an unrelated issue (check up before the big snip ) so I will ask the vet tomorrow, just wanted to see what you guys thought on here. Thanks!

My sibe sheds his guard hairs once a year, usually in July and it lasts about 2 weeks. I don't know about others but mine does, and it does not coincide with blowing coat either. _________________

Neither of my huskies ever shed more than a couple guard hairs at a time. I think I would ask about it just to make sure everything's okay. Many vets who are not familiar with "all things husky" may not really know the answer, though...

Hmmmm, interesting. Thanks for the replies. I will definitely inquire about it tomorrow. Hopefully this vet knows their huskies!

Guard hairs are the outer, coarser hair. They are usually pin straight. Undercoat fur is softer, usually not perfectly straight, and can come out in clumps.

Well the vet didn't seem too concerned about it. Says he is a healthy husky. He weighed in at 58 pounds, and he still has a lot of filling in to do!
