| My cat is declawed but has managed to bite both of Snow's ears because she won't leave him alone. She actually looks as though she is trying to nip at the cat. The cat has several places to go to get away from her but refuses to do so. He tries bopping Snow on the head but that just makes Snow want to play more because he isn't able to scratch her. I try the "Leave it" command but that doesn't work with her when it comes to the cat. I can try to get some video so you all can see how she acts with him. I'm just worried that as she gets bigger, she'll become more rough with the cat |

| Honestly, tough love is the best option. You have to be firm with her about how she is to act with the cat. She is young, and I am assuming that most of the time she just wants to play, but she needs to know that NO contact with the cat, other than snuggling is permitted. Every time Cato approaches the cats we have to pull him away, grab his snout lightly and give a firm no. I know that I will catch some scrutiny for this, but it is the only thing that works for him. Even the cats clawing his face doesn't work. Now all I have to say is No and he walks away. |

| Megan is right with the tough love. You have got to establish a very firm set of rules and stick to them religiously, or Snowflake will not see you as the dominant one and walk all over you. We had the same issues early on with our cats, and we supplement the "leave it" command with a squirt bottle. We have 5 or 6 of them lying around the house and whenever one of the dogs does something undesirable we zap them in the face with it. We generally just use water, but initially we had a small amount of bitter apple mixed in. I also know of people who use a small amount of vinegar. You really need to be firm with her, Huskies are extremely stubborn and need very sound, structured discipline. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | Don't worry Megan. I grab Kale's muzzle to make a point and get his attention as well. A gentle but firm grab and some intense eye contact and he knows I mean business lol |

| I have a bottle with water/vinegar in it. I'll start giving her a squirt of it when she gets near the cat. |

| Make sure you hit her in the face with it, otherwise she'll never even acknowledge that she got sprayed. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | The alternative is to use positive reinforcement and reward Snow whenever she is leaving the cat alone - give a treat or some petting and praise every time she doesn't pay attention to the cat, even if it is just for a split second. The length of time she ignores it for will build up as she realizes that good things come when she lets the cat be.
Obviously you have to remove Snow from the cat if she gets too boisterous with it. Since the cat is declawed, it can't defend itself if it needs to. Make sure the cat always has somewhere to go that Snow can't get to. The dynamic between them will change as Snow grows up, and the cat will also become more dog savvy.
Keep working on the leave it command. It takes a while for any command to become second nature. Remember that 'leave it' for a small treat is much easier for Snow than 'leave it' for an interesting, moving furry thing. You can gradually build up to 'leave it' from something easy to more and more interesting things, and one day she will have 'leave it' for the cat too. |
