Forum Rules
1. Here we prefer clarity to agreement. Obviously not everyone is going to agree on a topic; here we prefer to talk out our differences in a respectful manner to ensure mutual understanding and respect.
2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff.
3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned.
4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. The picture should be no more than 200x500 pixels and should be of an appropriate subject, for example, your dogs and their names. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Links: Hyperlinks in signatures--unless to a personal blog or photo stream of your dogs (like Flckr or Piscasa, for example)--are strictly prohibited. Please PM a staff member with any questions or concerns regarding this rule.

Thoughts on prong/pinch collars? Empty
PostSubject: Thoughts on prong/pinch collars?   Thoughts on prong/pinch collars? EmptyMon Jun 04, 2012 4:24 am

My Colby is a strong girl, I'm talking 60 lbs of pure muscle. When I first Leah trained her, she was an angle. No pulling. Stayed one step behind me. Etc. But one time when I was rollerblading with her and my moms lab, an unleashed golden retriever ran up to us and naturally I got nervous, being that I was on wheels and at the mercy of 2 very large very strong dogs. Both love other dogs, but I think Colby sensed my fear and thought I was afraid of the golden (which I wasn't, I had never seen him before but his body language was relaxed and friendly) But anyway, and she immediately lunged into protect mode. Chain reaction set the lab in the same state of mind. Thankfully I was somehow able to keep both dogs from hurting the other dog and my partner brought him to where she thought he came from.

Since then, Colby has been approaching all other dogs, no matter the size, in a forceful way and won't back down until she feels they mean no harm. This sucks since I live in a dog friendly apartment building and we encounter 40 dogs a day. She can literally tear me across the street with no sweat, and I'm not a petite girl by any means.

I've tried the head halter but it dosen't work. It seems the prong collar is my only option until I can reestablish boundaries. My uncle used to use them on his dog and was very mean and rough with it (the dog eventually turned on him) and that's why I hate this kind of collar.

Anyone have Advice and/or alternative options (besides the no-pull harness)?

P.S. please excuse typos/grammatical errors, I'm at work on my iPhone

Here's a link to us discussing this a few months ago. I don't think the OP's original question was about prong collars, but the topic moved in that direction, as well as I recall.

(I don't know how to link "neatly"...)
