Training a husky to Pull Empty
PostSubject: Training a husky to Pull   Training a husky to Pull EmptySat Jan 30, 2010 2:36 pm

Hi Everyone

My siberian husky Arapahoe is 2 in May. Up till now she has been a total soppy pet dog, but know we want to start doing some pulling. As she has been training to loose lead walk the idea of pulling seems a bit alien. I was advised that the best way to start was to get her to start pulling a car tyre and with her in her new adanac harness we tried today. The result was not great. Arapahoe did not get was was expected I walked in front of her with the treat bag but we did not get very far.

Please, any suggestions as to how we get Arapahoe pulling would be appreciated. She is a wonderful dog and I know scootering will be fun for us both.

Thanks in advance

alex and Arapahoe

Quick question... ¿Do you have a bungee on the line? I punched a hole through the tire and tied some bungees through it and that helped greatly in getting started. Maybe have someone help and you start out 20-30 yards in front, then coax with treats and have the helper pull the tire lightly to help her get started.

Hi

I have a bungee, and stood in front calling her with treats, I also attached a short lead to her collar and ran with her holding a feeding treats, that worked for a short while, but I felt the enthusiasm was not quite there. Sayiung that she did nuch better than the dalmation did when I gave her a go!!

Heh, my only other suggestion would be a lighter load. You definitely don't want to wear her out on it. Set her up for success with a log or several water bottles tied together. You just want to associate the lean in the harness with the command at this point, so the lightest weight that gets her going is your starting point. A tire was too much for any one of my dogs, but three had no problem with it. Very Happy
