Today at the dog park, my wife and I met a couple with an all black husky pup. I have never seen one before and was wondering if it was full husky? The man said the father was an all black husky with two green eyes. Also surprising to me. Just wondered if anyone else has seen a black husky.

That's pretty interesting. I've personally never seen a full black husky, but I have seen mostly black huskies from working lines. Did you happen to get any pictures?

This question poped into my head a few times. I have an all white and thought to myself there probably are some all blacks out there too.

When I looked on Google there didn't seem to be an all black that screamed full husky to me. They all have a bit of coloring or they look mixed.

You should take a picture of him. Would love to see him. I love the really dark huskies. If I had chosen my dog he would have been a dark one.

His physical characteristics were very husky looking. It didn't really look like he was mixed, but then again I am no expert. No, I didn't get any pictures, but I will try to get some if I see him at the dog park again. The only white he had was a little on the very tips of his toes, but barely any.

That's pretty interesting, I suppose it's possible but at the same time I think that it would probably be very rare. Did he look a little something like this?

Here's a link to a site with that picture as well as all the different Husky colors, it sounds like he would fall under mostly black if he resembles the photo. The only other explanation I can think of is a mix breed, did the owners know who the mother was?

I have never seen all black except if they are mixed. But I have heard of them! Here is a pic from a breeder I almost went to. These are pure bred but they aren't fully black. It is the closest I have seen to all black, a very unique look.

Yes, Aidan he looked very similar to that, only in puppy form. The owners said they were able to meet both of the pups parents, but who knows if it was a legit breeder and if they even know what the parents should look like. The man said that the pups mom was on the small side and that she was 70 lbs. Thats pretty big for a female. Additionally, the pup was three months old and looked like mine did when he was a month old. However, that man said that all the litter mates were the same size as mine and that the all black one was the only small one like that. So it would seem that something wasn't adding up. Maybe the breeder, or person he bought it from, was somewhat dishonest with the quality/kind of puppy he/she was selling.

I think if they are completely black it has to be a mix of some kind. This would be known as an alaskan huskies.

The only mixes I can think of would be 1) low wolf content and husky/mal
2) GSD and husky/mal

The one picture that WolvenSight posted are purebred huskies. That coloring can happen in purebred malamutes as well but never completely black

According to the breed standard all colors are acceptable in huskies, including completely black. As AMB said, they are more common from working lines, but it is very possible that it is a purebred. I have seen many examples, but here is a photo of one at the nationals this year. You can see the dog is almost entirely black with white toes. They are not common or preferred in the show ring, but they can be purebred.

The last two photos are from an extremely reputable breeder that DNA tests, so there is no doubt that they are full siberian.

The standard must be different for mals because this is not allowed in malamutes. See I said I think. I am not sure. thanks for clearing that up. Those black huskies are pretty!!!

I had never seen one until I joined this forum and met Ceara this summer. I think they are pretty too! The more I learn, the more 'husky' they look to me, at first I couldn't get over the color, but now I can kind of see past it and look at head/body characteristics. I still haven't seen a mostly black husky in person.

Just beautiful

I have a purebred husky that's almost completely black, Dexter!  His mom was completely black and his dad was completely white.

Now I'm gonna have to add another want to my Rainbow husky collection want list.

We have a H2M2~Ohio member that had an mostly black (the dog is currently lost or stolen). Blackie when I meet her looks more like from racing lines. Sleek slim etc. The owner is a breeder so it is Siberian husky.


This is Bourbon chasing her this past summer when she was still young.

That is a beautiful dog. She looks so much smaller than Bourbon. However, all these posts answer my question quite well….there are all black or mostly black huskies. That is too bad that she is currently lost or stolen. I hope they are able to bring her back home soon!

I think she is 6 month younger than Bourbon so she was maybe 5 months old pup there. But she is a tiny husky on the racing line side of thing rather the show line side. She is a beauty. I like the mostly black look too.

One thing to remember too is that they can be born almost solid black and look mostly black as puppies, while the black recedes as the dog matures. So if this was a young puppy you saw at the dog park, it could show more white as it matures. Here are some pictures of our girl Darka at different ages. UKC CH Taja's Bohemian Rhapsody. As for the breeder saying the father had green eyes that was probably a sales technique and a 70lb female is believable especially if she had just had puppies. but definitely not on the small side.
