| New to being a husky mom. How do you go about roller blading or bicycling with your huskies? How do you train them not to pull you over or to stop. |

The best way is to teach your dog a sled team leader's commands. The first is to keep the line taut at all times. From there you can work on go, stop, right, and left. It is best to train the dog while you are on foot behind him long before you add wheels. Like with obedience, you need to be close enough to work with the dog when it does something wrong (like heading right when you wanted him to go left). There is a good book by Fishback. I recall the exact title, but I believe it is called Training Lead Dogs. Most of the dog sled outfitters, like Black Ice, carry it. The author goes through the entire process. It is definitely worth it if you want a reliable dog out in front of you. |

| Thank you I will look into that Which one would we choose as the lead dog. Our two year old or our 6 month old? Would we have to wait until she is full size to have them do it together? |

| The six-month old is too young to really pull. But you can still train her. In fact, it is probably a good idea to train both dogs. Few dogs enjoy running alone in lead. Most enjoy a partner as it helps alleviate the stress of leading. And with only a couple dogs, they will probably run in tandem so it is best that they both move in unison versus one dog having to listen to you and muscle the other dog.
It is a bit of work to train a reliable lead dog, which is why many serious mushers look for an experienced leader to train their existing dogs. But it is very rewarding when you develop a close relationship with your dogs while training them.
Good luck!

Agreed, and really she shouldn't be running on a hard surface yet at all. As Lead Dog said, you can still train her to get her used to the pulling type commands, but wait til she's 10 months to a year old before you start doing any serious running besides just running around a yard or park. Otherwise you risk damaging her growing joints. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | I figured she is still too young for that so I will definitely focus on just the commands while walking for now. Thank you both for the tips |
