We usually leave our dog with her Grandma (yes, Phantom thinks it's her grandma, not mine) when we travel but this time it looks like we will have to kennel her or take her with us. We are going for a 3-day weekend to a Hampton Inn that allows dogs. It's for a friends wedding so at least one evening we will be gone for quite a few hours. My dog has separation anxiety, which is generally okay at home, but fluctuates in different places. My question is this: Has anyone traveled with their dogs to pet friendly hotels? What is the hotel's response if the dog is noisy? Good/bad experiences...?

She doesn't really bark or howl, but whimpers with a couple high-pitched yips every so often, when alone. I'm wondering if I should risk it with her in the hotel. Most of the time she won't be alone. But she HATES being kenneled; I think it gives her shelter-PTSD.

I've traveled quite a bit with a dog and stayed mostly at Best Westerns but I don't think I ever left the dog alone in the hotel room. Some hotels won't even allow it. There's also the chance she could damage something in the hotel room which would become your responsibility to pay for. Have you checked the full pet policy?

I have stayed at 2 pet friendly hotels, however, we're with them for the most part and if they are alone in the room, it's only for an hour to get something to eat in the club room, or they come with us to the lounge where the dogs are allowed.

I think if other hotel guests near your room complains, it might become an issue.

Koda stayed at a hotel with us for 10 days when we first moved here and he stayed in a hotel for around 2 weeks when he was a pup. However, Koda was not disruptive in any way. There's quite a few hotels that allow pets, but if your dog is going to cause another guest's experience at the hotel to be unpleasant, then they are more than likely going to say that the dog has to be removed. I love dogs and whatnot, but if I was staying at a hotel and I constantly heard a dog causing some ruckus, I would complain if the owner could not get them to calm down.
I personally would not bring a dog with separation anxiety to a hotel.

A lot of shelter dogs can be sensitive around boarding kennels, while others adjust no problem. I ALWAYS suggest that dog works take their dog to the boarding facility a handful of times for daycare to realize it is a fun place, it is a safe place, and you will be coming back. I worked at a doggy daycare/boarding/training place for a long while and when owners did this, the dogs responded to being boarded so much better.
I don't think I would say that she has "kennel-PTSD" though. A lot of dogs just don't like being boarded and it takes a while before they warm up to it. We had plenty of raised-from-puppies dogs at my work that would thrash in their rooms (which were very nice, glass doors, super spacious), try to jump over, bark/screech nonstop... Koda even did this mildly (bumping the door, softing wooing all pathetic) sometimes when he was in the rooms at my work during their play break but got over it.
Dogs get anxious. Dogs like being in their environment and new atmospheres can be hard to adapt to. There's new people handling them they don't know. Different routine. It's overwhelming.
If your trip is not too far out, like I said, I'd do daycare 1-2x a week for a few weeks and maybe 1-3 trial boardings.

Can you arrange for a pet sitter or can the hotel? Some hotels offer that service. When we couldn't take our dogs, we found a non-kennel pet sitter that operates out of her house. Frosti has separation anxiety but since she had her brother with her and got to visit before we dropped her off to play with the dogs, she was fine.

We have always taken our pack with us, and we leave them in the room, alone, but we don't kennel ours, so I really wouldn't be able to help with that aspect.

I would look into a local doggie daycare. We did it when we went to the valley, and it was only about 30$ for all 4 dogs.

Just make sure that you have shot records, as most will require that.

$30 for 4 dogs!?!?? What kind of crazy cheap pricing is that? Haha. Cheapest I've seen is 15/day (that's their official price, no drop rate) or our daycare was $22/day 50% off each additional dog.

lol, it was a spring break special. I got lucky. The normal price is like 15 to 20 a day, per dog.

Hopefully I didn't miss out on this one too much, but we have brought big-mouth Delilah with us multiple times. All I can suggest is that you bring kongs/ Elk Antlers, Raw Meaty Bones and giver a couple doses of Bach's Rescue Remedy for Pets. That stuff works wonders. When we went to a wedding out of town, we DID NOT create Delilah, we put her in the Bathroom with toys and dosed her for about an hour before. She slept the majority of the time. We were gone for about 6 hours and she did fine. (I call her big mouth because she is a noise maker)

Is the hotel close to the reception? I would stop in 1 - 2x to check on the pup.

I'd also suggest daycare.

Mine usually only go for a half day (5.5 hours) and it's $11 for the first dog, $9 for the second dog and I get 10% off for being a student..

Thanks guys! My dog loves her doggy daycare (where we have also kenneled her a FEW times) but once she's in there overnight it's a whole different story. When we pick her up in the morning she will be trembling non-stop for the next few hours. It also really sets her back with her SA issues. This is why I call it kennel-ptsd, she comes back acting like the same dog we picked up from a kennel 3 years.

The hotel doesn't have any policy against the dog being left alone but there is a policy saying excessive noise, aggression, etc. won't be tolerated. She would be crated in the hotel so I don't worry about her destroying anything. Despite the fact that she is not noisy 90% of the time when alone at home due to SA training, I just worry she will decide "I'm in a scary new place, I'm going to cry A LOT now!". Unfortunately, we won't be able to check in with her during the wedding/reception it's too far away. I just remembered I have a friend in that town not going to the wedding that I could leave her with that evening. So I'm going to look into that. Otherwise I will look into sitters, that's a good idea. We do that at home sometimes.

I love dogs, but I too would not want to listen to a howling dog all evening in my hotel room.
