you might want to reconsider the electric fence for Sniper, they do not work very well for huskies as they get older they get more depended and the pray drive starts and if she sees something she wants the shock will not stop her from going after it! please read up on them and think about a solid fence. thanks! i will read up on them. i didn't realize that. some friends of ours have a saint bernard and they do well with the fence and so does the rotweiller and boxer. I will think about the solid fence depending on cost. Are you talking of like chain link fence or wood? Wood is really expensive and we are building a NEW house so we are already BROKE! so i will keep this in mind! and you can call me Crystal

I'll second what Jenn says in regards to the electric fence. I have a close friend who has the electric fence for her husky and she's had to resort to putting the collar around it's waist and so the prods are on his balls (lol) for it to be even semi effective. Even then the dog will see a bunny or deer and run through the fence at the weakest point (the driveway), take the shock and then will NOT cross back to come home because it doesn't want to take the shock to get back home.

Oh yeah. Here's a good example on the effectiveness of electric fences when paired with a Husky...


...and mine can climb chain link as well. Containing sled dogs can be quite the riddle.

a wood fence or one of the solid plastic fences would be a good idea, maybe down the road you can afford it. I know a lot of people that use a tie out but only with supervision! maybe you can build a dog run for now when you get into the house? there are also some huskies so bad at jumping fences that they also hotwire the fence so they cannot jump or dig under them! I hope you Sniper does not turn into one of those!

Basically, any sort of fencing works (wood, plastic, wire, etc) as long as the dog is supervised in the yard. Personally, I don't see a situation where the dog should ever be outside by himself? As long as the fence is tall enough and the dog is supervised, most fencing will work until you can put in a nice sturdy, reliable fence.

ok thanks you guys! we wasn't planning on leaving her un-attended! just while we are out in the yard on nice days so she could run. we start construction in january and when we get some tax credit money back we will look into the privacy fence for the back yard! thanks again you guys!

The only other thing I think comes to mind regarding fencing is that you should think ahead and make the fencing go about 3 feet into the ground to deter the dog from digging under it. Some of my dads customers have had to resort to burying chicken wire 3 feet under the ground and laying it flat so that one edge matches up with the fence (that's set into the ground 3 feet) and the other edge is literally 3 feet into the yard. Cover it all up with soil and you're good. They had to resort to radical measures when their husky dug out on 4 different occasions and slaughtered a bunch of chickens. The extra chicken wire has been a huge help.

Didn't think you meant to leave her unattended. My point is merely that regular fencing is ALWAYS preferable to electric fencing.

However, if you're on a tight budget, some sort of "cheaper" regular fencing will work until you can put in the proper privacy fence, etc to be totally secure.

We're not here to tell you what to do It's simply that so many dogs, huskies especially, have been injured, lost or killed because people underestimate a husky's prey drive, escape tactics, and stubbornness. I also don't want you to waste the hundreds of dollars on an electric fence when it's really not going to work for your dog. I hope this makes sense

I think that an electric fence is the best $100.00 you will ever spend. It took us awhile to figure that out and anyone who buys a puppy from me I tell. Mine are all supervised out side on and off the runner I have set up.

The only one I have to worry about is Thor he is a cat killer and if he sees a cat it is over. And he runs until he just about falls over...because he knows he is in trouble. He goes under the fence. The girls both go over... like a gazelle! Neeko is the easiest to get and Dora is ok by herself... if she is with Thor she will run with him forever. Takoda has escaped out of the yard, but I think he would be a under the fence kinda boy. Once he went out the front door and ran strait to my neighbors house. Since then, he has no interest in going out the front door. To take him anywhere he has to go out the backdoor. Even better, he will only leave the yard with me!

Under the fence? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that this was regarding the buried electric fences. Do you have a picture of your other kind of electric fence?

I don't have one currently as the "forest" has to be cleared. But the ones we have used are for cattle. You use yellow plastic thingies about six inches from the ground and run the electric wire around the yard. You ground it and hook it to a box which plugs in. to an outlet.

It is totally safe...we use the one with the lowest setting. Katie my first husky touched it once and never escaped the yard again....until we moved. I have had six week old pups touch it.... a little yelp and that was all. The dogs can smell the electricity..(so my hubby says) and will avoid the fence. Which when I played kick ball with Katie, if the ball got to clase to the fence she would not get the ball, I would have to.

The only bad thing is keeping up with grass and weeds around the fence.

I'm guessing that you don't live in a residential community. I could only imagine one of the neighborhood kids touching it. Lol.

We like to live towards the country. Or an older neighborhood, where the yards are HUGE!

REALLY old bump, but I am going to ask this question. I have a 5 foot fence in my yard. The bottom of the fence is not to secure... As in Juno can dig a bit and fit under the fence. I have a few options available to me and I'd love some help from the locals here.

1) I buy hog wire and bury it around my fence, attaching it to the chain link fence...

2) I put an electric fence along the bottom of the fence to keep her from digging. (My least favorite because she likes running along the fence)

3) I buy concrete blocks and position them around my fence. (Cheapest but ugliest)

4) I buy railroad type blocks of treated wood. Hammer rebar 2-3 feet into ground to ensure wood never moves.

What do you guys suggest?

Can you position the electric fence so that its effective range starts just on the other side of your fence? Like so she could run along the fence inside, but if she tunneled to the other side or pushed through the bottom she got shocked?

I could on one 1/2 of the fence, but the other half has a poodle on the other side of the fence.
