Obviously not everyone is going to agree on a topic; here we prefer to talk out our differences in a respectful manner to ensure mutual understanding and respect. 2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff. 3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned. 4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. | I would go easy and careful on these so called "salmon" omega 3 supplements - even if they say they come "from Alaska". They can easily cause loose stool, and liver/kidney problems amongst other issues. So depending on what you are trying to supplement (better coat, ease digestion etc.) you might want to look at natural foods.
We're lucky we live in The Last Frontier where we (despite the restrictions we have this year on salmon fishing) stock up on fresh salmon I fish and then dry or freeze for them and smoke for us. We also give them Yummy Chummy treats the dark blue not red package and raw turkey necks which we buy by the case loads.
A lot of these supplements like Costco sells Glucosamine with Chondroitin and other bone and arthritis meds are really a waste of money. They are neither pure enough nor in sufficient quantity to make any difference. Same goes for shark cartilage etc. at least that's what I found after 20 years.
Try to go for a good and well balanced diet and dog food depending on the level of activity for your dog. We feed twice a day or more often if we run them or in winter when temps dip to -60F and adjust their fat accordingly - for summer we reduce by 1/3 the amount we feed a day; so less than 2 cups to keep them in their fighting weight and change out fat for greens (spinach etc.).
For one of our sled dogs that has the beginning of a hip problem, we've found that Adequan (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan or PSGAG) injections do help enormously. DO NOT use on hypertensive dogs!. it was initially used on horses and found that it works wonders on dogs. It's neither an NSAID nor steroid, is well tolerated and as most things we are able to treat her ourselves (if adequate treats are at hand and a mariachi band is at hand to entertain her).
Lastly keeping your dog's weight in check helps (as in humans) in placing less strain on the articulations as well as providing good overall health.
Just my 2 cents.
