Okay, so I've searched around and can't really find anything on this. Indy and I just recently moved and our house has legit, genuine all original hard wood floors. His nails are tearing them to pieces. I keep them trimmed down as short as I can without hurting him or causing discomfort. I have boots for him that I use for hiking and running, but I don't want to keep those on his feet all of the time. They might start causing raw pads/skin and too much pain for him. I've thought about nail caps and will try those as son as I find some.

I wanted to ask though, what do you guys use to save your hardwood floors?

do you know what you're floors are finished with? you could research some scratch resistant sealant for the floors, we have hardwood floors in our home too but rocky hasn't scratched anything, his nails are really short though so i'm not sure how short indy's nails are. rocky's don't go past his paw at all, when he stands they don't touch the floor just when he starts walking and his paws move forward. but i would definitely research any scratch resistant sealant cause even for people who don't have dogs the floors can get scratched easily from moving furniture around.

I'm not sure. Whatever it is, it's not working. Indy's nails are the same. They don't touch the floor if he's standing, but he has a bad habit of running on them and doing what I call his "tap dance." But thanks for the advice! I'll be looking around for some.

LOL! the tap dance, i'm familiar with that, rocky does that every time at petsmart! it's like they just waxed the floors or something and he is like trying to run but he's barely going anywhere! at first i was worried cause i thought his nails were too long but they weren't now i just think it's funny cause he's so excited. i'll ask my dad if there are any brands for scratch-resistant sealants that he recommends - he's a contractor and he did the floors at our house so i will ask him and let you know what he says!

We have pergo floors in our house. Blaze's nail do not do scratch the floors. He had the hardest time sitting on these floors he slides all the way down...

Thanks so much, Judy! That'd be awesome! I'm looking at the nail caps now. They're so expensive for what they are! Geez! And I think I would have to order the dog caps. Petco nor Petsmart carry them for dogs.

Haha Indy doesn't slide when he's sitting, but he does have problems running. We have area rugs throughout the house and he's jumping from one to the other without touching the floor lol. It's hilarious.

it also depends on what the wood is. We have wood floors, but ours are pine, so they scratch REALLY easily (and will eventually be so scratched it will look like it's distressed on purpose.) I don't think that there's really a good way to completely prevent scratching (especially with zoomies indoors!) but I have found that our dogs tend to lie down in the same places most of the time, so we could put area rugs there if we wanted too.

If re-finishing is an option, I would look into Bona products. Probably the high-traffic stuff. It's a bit pricey, but is supposed to hold up REALLY well.

Our house was built in the 40s. We have the original wood floors. They are scratched to hell, and I pretty much gave up trying to refinish them. Luckily it's only in the bedrooms and halls now, (The rest has been replaced with tile). I have tried the Bona recoat finishers and they still scratched them up, but it did take a while longer for them to be scratched.

With 5 dogs, I gave up trying to keep the floors shiny and smooth LOL

if not renting i would also looking into having the floors refinished with a better sealer. we did the laminate wood up stairs in the bedrooms and so far so good on not scratching them. we did put in a hug rug in the bedroom so we dont hear the nails on the floor at night. helped a ton.

It's an old house, from the 20's that's been remodeled, but the floors are all still original. So there's not telling. It looks like yours in your avatar, but a darker wood. It's scratching super easy.

Jenn, no I won't get in trouble. But the floors weren't scratched till Indy showed up lol. So I want to help take care of them for my friend. I'm not renting, so it's not that big of a deal. But I still feel really bad.
