Breeding wolf-dogs has become illegal in my state.
I'm not sure how I feel about this. I'm glad people can't do it anymore because I see it as incredibly irresponsible, but I also feel like people should have the common sense not to do it (even though they don't have that sense, apparently) and not have their right of choice taken away.

good because there are soo many wolfies in rescues . The sad fact is it is not going to stop people still.

I know! It's only gonna stop the people who are slightly more responsible than everyone else. I have a feeling that there is going to be a surge in wolf-dog population as now it will be considered cool because it's illegal :/

I won't really touch on if I think it should be illegal or not but I will say that breeding and owning a wolf hybrid is illegal in the state of Utah. However, check our most popular classifieds and you will see pups for sale, and studs up for breeding at any time of the year. Just because it's now a law doesn't mean anything will change...

Apparently the DNR has been checking with people and finding them through their websites and ads and such. Although they way they decide if your dogs are actual hybrids seems really stupid to me.
Here's what a breeder posted on the Wisconsin Siberian Husky group on facebook:
"The DNR found us from our website, they said that the head office in Madison looks for people who have wolf breeds. Two of them came to our house and said we can get dna testing but they failed the DNR tests (by looking only) already. They went by: long toes, longer snout, tail down, and etc.... basically they call it wolf dog. They were very nice, but it's very frustrating because everyone (including DNR guys) said they were VERY well behaved. DNR's report said very docile!"

I don't know if that's something you can just do by looking, especially if they want to check out any dog with any percentage. Watered down hybrids would be harder to do this with. And it seems like the DNR is assuming all wolf-dogs are nuts

Which is why I cringe whenever anyone ever the age of 5 calls Appa a wolf.

He doesn't even look like a wolf .__. I guess he was pointy ears... lol

Ugh I hate when people say I have a wolf dog... I'm like they aren't wolves at all, wolf was bread out of them long time ago... "oh it's cause she's a wolf dog.." no I think it's cause your an idiot.

It reminds me of when someone told me I must think I'm a bad ass because I can walk my pit bull with my bike, while I was walking my red doberman

I have to remind myself that to those that aren't around Huskies and Mals often (like we are) they are very wolfish looking. I forget how striking of an appearance Appa has until I go to the dog park.

That is true, I guess. I suppose it's worse when the people aren't usually around any dog

I'd like to have some wolf dogs eventually. A wolf dog rescue, actually. Later in life though when I'm more financially prepared.

Ya I dont mind when they say they resemble them. They do, there are those who actually try convincing me they are... I'm like you clearly don't know how obsessed I am with this breed.

yep people will say wolf to any malamute/husky. It is only because they are uneducated with the breeds. I love wolf dogs but the breeder has to stop, to many in shelters.

Just met a guy that worked a pet store the other day who said he has several wolf dogs that he rescued from a breeder that got "busted". What was even more disturbing was when he told me he had a litter of 12 in his back yard and was going to put them on craigslist to sell. What a mess!

No kidding! One ignorant man that lives by me will go walk on the other side of the street when we are out walking because he thinks my pups are wolves. Isn't that ridiculous?

That was Embry's breeder. She actually ended up having to rehome both of her female hybrids It was a lot of paperwork inorder to keep them, especially when she's moving in a few months

Really? Paperwork is what made her decide to get rid of them?

I personally think the law is great, but doubt it will stop all wolfdog breedings. My only concern is that is might give room to ban certain breeds from being allowed to be bred and that's overstepping it.

I took Blaze to a Dog function Saturday.. "Bark Park"
To make a long story short we ment someone who had a Wolf Hybrid they dog was mostly wolf with some Siberian in it. This dog (wolf) was very pretty all white the owner had two other dogs with him the other dogs were a pit mix and a rott mix with 3 legs..
The wolf dog seem very gentle but the owner had full control of her.

I would always wonder with a Wolf -dog if the wolf side would kick in sometime.

Yeah because they were move to a different state, and they were making a really big federal case about moving hybrids. They went to their family friend.


Also in order to stop hybrid breeding in WI, any hybrid you own needs proof of a spay/neuter

was it mostly wolf lik high content? Here in california you can't have a dog over 50% without a permit. There are soooooo many in rescues why can't people think about that before they decide to breed a wolf-hybrid.
