I love how our dogs smell too! It doesn't seem to be as strong today, so at least Aaron isn't bitching about it.

Do any of you have cats? I have read mixed reviews regarding the use of oils with cats. I was wondering what the take was. Some vets even suggest using oils ON cats. I asked a holistic vet about using it on the dogs collars and not diffusing it in any other way and he said it will be fine as long as the cats are out of the room when it is initially applied.

We use the lavender oil for our cats as well. They haven't had any reactions to it *knock on wood*

Good to know. I think I'll do a little research on it and see what I come up with.

Meredith, are there any holistic vets near you? I would call a couple and see what you find.

There aren't any in our town, but I think there are some down in Pensacola. I've been poking around a little bit, but haven't had as much time as I'd like. I ran into our old vet last night at a restaurant. She opened her own practice down the road a bit in Pensacola, and I think we're going to move into that office. She does a little bit with holistic medicine, and I'd like to talk to her some more. We talked a little last night, but we'd both had copious amounts of beer at that point so it wasn't much of a conversation Razz

What options do I have besides Tea Tree Oil? I am leery about using it with the cats.

For fleas there's also Lavender or Cedarwood oil. I have always heard not to use essential oils with cats. If you do, be careful. I personally wouldn't but to each his own.

This thread is a little bit old, but I don't want to have to start a brand new one. We're using Rose Geranium and Lavender oils. I've had no ticks whatsoever when I keep t the RG oil on them. But the lavender doesn't seem to be working. I don't really have a big issue with fleas, but finding one single flea on Snickers 3 days after putting the oil on his collar is annoying. He does seem to be more susceptible to fleas than Ava is and breaks out if one bites him, so apparently he's extra tasty to them. I'm just wondering if its safe to use the lavender more than once a week? I thought about putting a drop on them on Wednesdays and Sundays, but I don't know if that would overdo it (or if that's even something to worry about) or what.

I put it on 2x a week. It's already so muggy up here, I'm not taking chances with any bugs. They don't even notic when it's reapplied Smile

Yep, it's totally fine to apply the oils more than once a week if necessary.

Just bought lavender and rose geranium oils! I'm excited to see how well they work. I'm a little concerned about the fact that the RG oil will be taking a long time to arrive as our dogs are due for more flea and tick soon...the lavender will be here on Tuesday though!

We get our essential oils at Whole Foods, which is convenient since that is where we do most of our grocery shopping.

Currently using Lavender, Rose Geranium, and Tea Tree, and applying every 4-5 days seems to work.

Fleas are so bad this year. I'm using Comfortis and lavender oil on Ava, but I still see a flea or so on her. Does it seem like either the tea tree or cedar oil works better? I've gotta do something :/

Tea Tree is an incredibly strong scent, Definitely stronger than the lavender IMO. I would give that a try.

There is no harm in using multiple different oils. I find Cedarwood to be strong too, I stay away from Tea Tree oil simply because I don't like the smell. Myndi, have you also tried applying the oils around the house like on the furniture and dog beds/blankets?

As a side note, I read in my local newspaper about Eucalyptus oil for repelling mosquitoes. I wonder if it would repel other pests, I may have to look into that some more.

I think I'm the problem, honestly. We see so many animals with fleas at work and I'm always getting flea bites. I must be bringing them home with me. I'll have to make a spray and spritz myself off before work once my new bottles get here. I'm trying lemongrass and peppermint this time since I've heard really good things about them. Eventually I'll find a combo that works and won't smell horrible, I hope. Damn fleas...
