I'm moving soon - into my first place of my own. Just hoping to rent while I finish school. I'm really having issues though! I can't seem to find anything around here that's pet-friendly and its making me really nervous. Have any of you guys moved with huskies before?? Any tips to find someplace to take Ava and Snickers?? Its so disheartening :c

Good luck, but alot of insurance has huskies on "black list" for breeds of dogs.

black listed breeds are caused by what should be black listed humans....Puppies aren't born mean!

It might take a little legwork but you should be able to talk someone into renting to you. I actually proposed tO my landlord that I'd pay double the pet deposit to sweeten the deal. Moving with any kind of animal is a pain, the Husky just compounded that on this last move. I'm also in a house and not an apartment.

I have always had animals and when I moved I always looked for a place that lets you have animals. Surprising enough it's always the apartments that let me. Trying to rent a house was like pulling teeth.
Oh the reason why I liked this post is because I see so many post in like CL and such. Moving pets gotta go and such. I always wonder if those people really even looked.

Ya was gunna say look on craigslist and select the "allow dogs" thing and should be able to find something.

It took us forever to find a place that took our huskies, and they even already approved me for a 3rd when we're ready. I'd suggest calling your local animal shelter, they usually have a list of pet-friendly landlords.

Try Padmapper.com. Click on "Show More Filters" on the bottom and it gives you an option to select pet friendly places. That's what I used to find a pet-friendly apartment in Denver.

In our area, there are some apartment complexes that do rent to people with pets, it just takes a while to find them. You might also look into renting a small house if you can afford it. We've had better luck finding landlords willing to rent with a pet deposit and/or a bit extra each month to have a pet.

I've been checking on CL about it too - for both houses and apartments - but most places want dogs that won't get about 25lbs. The one place that I did find suddenly only allowed one dog when I listed what mine were (husky and collie mix). Then the woman asked me like, "Are you still interested in renting even though we only take one dog?" How many people do they meet who are okay with that?! I could never dump one of them at a shelter or anything just to get a better apartment and I was kinda shocked/offended when she asked.

I didn't even think to call the shelter there and ask them. I'll do that this week Thanks!

I'm sure that eventually I'll find something, its just so frustrating to weed through all the hopeful ones that don't work out.

Why would huskies/collies even be on that list? I mean, okay, I know huskies can be destructive, but collies?

I was thinking size, maybe? He's a good 80lbs - although he is a little fat. And he's 10, so he's kinda old, and incredibly lazy. Its not like he's gonna be causing any problems and destroying things...

Huskies are on ban lists because of 1)size. MANY huskies are not bred to the standard and can easily go 70-80 pounds (while being purebred huskies) 2) noise. Huskies howl and scream (and bark occasionally). Living with a husky that likes to talk in an apartment building could be a disaster. 3) Many people who get huskies and live in apartments (and sometimes houses) know little to nothing about the breed and don't exercise them enough and thus they become SUPER destructive - this is the biggest reason they're on ban lists for housing.

And then there are also the odd cases where Huskies attack and sometimes kill children or what have you. Of course this is no fault of the dogs but it is what it is.

I talked to a couple of insurance agents about why Huskies get band or increase homeowners insurance rates.. They told me that the data says they have bitten some people or kids this effects the rates.. I think the ones that have bitten people probably weren't getting enough exercise or the owners did not know how to deal with this breed.

Just my opinion.

I am moving again with Maggie. She is a malamute, my renter's insurance and other places have huskies but not malamutes on the list. It was still hard to find a place. here...

this site has list of pet friendly places. I found in my area I am moving to there were 20, I narrowed it down to 5.

I might have to list Ava as a miniature malamute then

We had to rent a house. The apartments that DID allow Huskies were several thousand a month. Maybe get a roommate and rent a house that is pet friendly??

I'm looking at houses too. Anything, really. I've even got a roomie lined up, but neither one of us can afford a whole lot at the moment. I'm waiting for some replies from a few different places. Wish me luck!

We have always just rented houses. Never had any problem finding a house that wouldn't allow Huskies. I'm sure appartments are a different story though.

im going to be moving soon and i also have a concern about my husky but the only difference is, is that i have him registured as a assistance dog with the state of california now i know hes still in training but i worry that they will turn me away does anyone know about that and if its legal to turn us down? because of his breed?

I'd read up on ADA compliance laws for assistance dogs, but if he's registered I'm reasonably sure it's illegal to turn you away. Just make sure you have documentation and it might not be a bad idea to get him a vest if you're worried about it.

I have a vest and his assistance dog tags are attached to it and the paper work i got from the animal control doesnt give much info on it just a different tag number and of course info to contact them for any questions i do hope that would be enough since im doing my own training which is legal to do in my state

There is NO registry for service animals. You don't have to provide a "register" for him. You do however, have to provide a written statement from your doctor saying that you "need" this service dog in order for them to not be able to turn you away.

You also DO have to pay a pet deposit if they require it, because even if the animal is a service animal, they can still do damages.

It IS illegal for them to turn you away if you have proof of need of the service dog.
