If you have taught your dog the "on by" command, can you explain how you did it or point me to a good online reference? I can't seem to find anything useful googling...

Kale knows on-by. I don't know how others taught it or if it was the right way, but I used a pinch collar. I'd say "on by" while using a gentle quick tug to get his attention back to the walk and eventually started just saying the command without the tug. He listens very well, but if it is a high interest object like a bird or squirrel, then I use the tug and "leave it" and that works better for him. Most times now he knows what he's not supposed to pay attention to (other dogs walking by, poop, etc.) so he ignores them without command.

I just started telling her "on by" and rewarding her for every time she ignored or passed up something that she would normally chase or be interested in. Hers isn't completely, 100% solid yet, but the majority of the time she'll pass things by.

Did the same thing on a bike. That's how I originally taught her it.

I just learned what "on by" meant and taught Chloe as I went. I of course let her go to the bathroom first, but after that she usally isn't allowed to stop and smell. There are alot of dogs on our walking path, which constantly bark everything we pass, but now she does a pretty good job of ignoring them. Assuming I'm the one walking her. Oh and I always make her walk slowly right beside me when we pass other dogs; this keeps her from crossing my path and getting really excited.

I said "on by" and kept moving at normal speed. If he stopped he got tugged. Started walking, then moved to jogging. Sometimes that tug was quite a tug (while jogging) but now he knows it. He only ignores an on by every now and then. On a bike I slow way down before the tug hits.

Obviously there was praise like he won the lottery when he did it right. Still is.

What I did is I would take each of my dogs out by themselves on a leash. ( in harness or not it doesn't really matter.)
We would go for a walk where I knew there would be a few distractions whether it be people or animals. When we came to a distraction on the trail I would call out "On by!" and start running. Once we got past the distraction I would slow back down to a walk and go crazy with praise! Lol
Now when I call out "On by" on the trail whether training or racing, the dogs speed up and fly past whatever is on the trail. Doing it this really helped wih passing other teams as the dogs sometimes wanna stop and chat wih each other but the extra speed they put out keeps them focused and makes for a clean pass.

Ditto this. I only use "on by' while going at faster than walking speed, otherwise I use "leave it".

Brian - You have three right? Do you walk them all together? I'm having the hardest time with leash management. I can walk the two young ones together no problem - one is trained to the right and the other to the left. But when I throw my old guy into the mix its total chaos. I can't seem to keep them calm and focused when its all three.

Yes 3 and if I have a foster 4. I had the same issue until I found out the secret.....

I walk them down the center of the street. I use a tandem leash for two and one separate. (In my signature the two on the left our together. It really was the center of the street that helped. When I walk in the park or where they are closer to stuff of interest it's more difficult.

I walk them down the center of the street. I use a tandem leash for two and one separate. (In my signature the two on the left our together. It really was the center of the street that helped. When I walk in the park or where they are closer to stuff of interest it's more difficult.

The couple of times we walked with Max my wife had him on a separate leash. We didn't have another leash the same length, which you really need for multiple dogs so they can be side by side and sort of pinned in. Max also didn't like to be crowded too much. Hoping for a report from his pending adopter today. I'll update his thread when I know something.

Yes, I've noticed that too! I can't do that the entire walk though because of the amount of traffic in our neighborhood. I haven't tried the tandem leash yet because I'm still giving frequent corrections to the young ones (light tugs) and sometimes they'll dart to the side or stop suddenly. The old guy has a torn ACL and I don't want any of their movement to pull him off balance. Maybe when they're older and calmer...

You might also use a neckline on the young ones to keep them side by side.
