| noticed layla favoring her right front leg tonite, and seen that her pad on her foot is raw. its not bleeding but can tell somehow she has peeled, skinned part of the pad.
will this heal on its own? can i put neosporin on it? any suggestions? |

| Pad injuries (particularly peeling, cuts and bleeding cracks) take a few weeks to recover. I try to limit activity to an absolute minimum and keep any sort of walking on soft surfaces. Wrapping some coban (vet wrap, self adhering tape stuff) around the foot for the walk helped me prevent bleeding, but I never went over half a mile with a fresh pad injury. If it's not very deep and already flaking skin, I would shear it off and eliminate all activity for two to three days. That's what has worked for me.
This also happens when a new dog is introduced to our exercise routine. The pads take a lot of conditioning to build toughness. With an uninjured dog I try to get them on every surface type I can think of.
And yes, neosporin is a fine ointment to use. |

| Make sure you wrap the paw if you put neosporin on. It could be toxic. i don't know about yours, but my dogs are lickers and would lick that stuff right off. |

| I agree with the limited exercise, and coban badges. However I disagree about the neosporin part. Neosporin slows down the recovery process on the pads, my vet said about our BC that ran away for a couple days.
There are doggie safe ones out there.

| We just recovered from 3 paw pad injuries. We were very protective - Epsom salt soaks 2x a day, neosporin, wrapped paw on limited walks. He healed up real nice. We did pretty much what Eddy said above. He healed up real nice. |
