Is this thread still going?! I was one of those annoying people who thought I had a Husky who would be great off-leash Very Happy That was back when he was 5 months old Tori Razz

He's 10 months old now, off-leash?! hahahaahahahahaha!!!! Do I have any control over Luka when he is off leash? Erm... NOPE!

Well, tell a lie, I should give him some credit, sometimes at the park (fenced in dog park - quite a nice size with a decent walk with a pond and stuff), if I am with Luka - and its 1-2-1 - meaning, i'm not walking with anyone, be it family member or another dog owner, then Luka's attention span is surprisingly amazing, I mean, he listens to me, 100% of the time. But honestly, training recall is great, but it doesnt work! If he wants to run, he will run, and there is NOTHING you can do about it. He is so bloody quick its ridiculous.

His recall rapidly deteriorated after 7 months - for any new husky owners out there whos pups have great recall, please please please remember to always keep an eye on your Husky, and expect that recall to get worse and worse - im an idiot, and I had to see it myself to believe it, even though I read a 100 posts like this myself, I thought my Husky was different. NOPE - he digs, he runs, he howls, he eats EVERYTHING, he talks, he is stubborn, but I love him Very Happy

Truth. I appreciate you giving that point of view. It's often one we hear in person and not one that gets posted because people don't like to admit when things didn't turn out the way they had hoped. Thank you. I think your post is going to be incredibly helpful to others. Smile

I think the bottom line with this topic is that no one should get a husky with the hope of being able to train it off-leash. If you HAVE to have an off-leash dog, this breed is not for you. Not because no husky can ever do it, but because it's a crap shoot. And even IF you do luck out and get a husky that has the temperament to train it, it STILL takes a lot of time and dedication to get to a "comfort level." And as with every breed, sometimes something just clicks and the training goes out the window because of an animal or high-value situation.

So... if you want an off-leash dog: don't get a husky. If you have a husky and think that your dog might have the temperament for it: be prepared for a LOT of training and hard work.

Either way, just make sure the decision is always with the best interests of your dog at heart.

Couldn't have said it better.

Again we didn't start out trying to train Tika to be off leash.

We were working on recall and perimeter training for when she ever got away from us unexpectedly (Hope for the best, plan for the worst). It wasn't something we went in thinking we were going to be doing. In fact it was the farthest thing from our minds. We understood the breed and that meant she was going to be an on leash dog at all times.

It wasn't until Tika's needs changed that we began working on it. It was the best way to include her in socialization with other dogs FOR US AND HER.

If you want an off leash dog who follows you everywhere and heels beside you, you're looking into the wrong breed. That isn't what we were looking for at all and not what we strived to have.
