| I think it is ridiculous that ANY vet worth the ink on their license would turn away an obviously wounded animal over money. I am thankful I live in a rural-ish area where the vets think less about the cashflow and more about the furballs! I am so sorry you are going through this, it is the worst! I know, my Aurora shucked out of her collar a month ago and walked out into the street. The vehicle that hit her didn't even stop. My son and I heard her wimpering and since she is not a vocal dog, we knew something was wrong. We ran out the back door and she had a bloody, skinned up nose and her mouth was bleeding. Of course it always looks so bad and there is nothing you can do to help them. I wrapped her up in a towel, jumped in the van and took off for the vet. I called them in the van to let them know I was on the way. Once there, doc examined her and it wasn't as bad as it could have been thankfully, but he wasn't sure about her jaw. It was lined up straight and she was using it normally but he did want me to keep an eye on it. Some antibiotics and some pain relief and we were on our way back home. She is skittish about any running vehicle now, although that is not a bad thing. Long story short, when it happened I didn't think, I just grabbed my keys and cell phone and that was it, so they were paid later that week after everything settled down. Postscript: Rory went in for her spay two weeks ago and we had noticed a small lump under her jaw a couple of days before. While she was unconscious, doc did a more invasive examination of her jaw and found that it had been broken, but was healing very nicely. She did however, have a very tiny bone fragment that had come loose and was irritating her, thus the lump. It was removed and we did another round of antibiotics just in case. Accidents happen. You can be the very best parent in the world and they will still get hurt. Huskies, I am learning, are no different that children. They need almost constant supervision...and padded rooms! |

| If you have exhausted all regular vets, try any large animal vets or possible alternative therapy veterinarians. Even if smaller animals aren't their specialty or they are practicing other sources of care, they have been through the same intial education and should know how to set a leg. They may also be willing to work with you on the financial aspect.

| Ummm... I really do hate people that talk like this in the middle of a crises. If you can not help with the issue then do not comment. You have no clue about this person financial situation. When she took the dog on she may have been in a much better situation. Who knows maybe someone stole all her money and CC last night so now she does not have access to any because she had to cancel everything. You just do not know. I am really so so sorry for this post but it is a huge pet peeve of mine for people to throw stuff out there like that during a time when some one is needing help.[/quote]
I do have to agree
its an unfortunate event and yes he should be taken to the vet asap but being in a hardship my self you try to do anything in your power to get the help you need and you dont want to be bashed on when your already in so much pain no need to put salt in an open wound im sure every thing will work out in the end good luck!

| While I agree that we don't need to member bash, let's not forget that the OP put in her first post "No money to take him to the vet. Trying to splint it now. Not much else I can do I guess." People have a right to react to that. People have also been offering as much and plenty of help as they can.
I'm a little stumped because I don't know a single vet here that would turn me away because I couldn't afford to pay right away. My best friend's horse foundered and she had to put her down eventually. It was a $1500 vet bill that she paid off at the rate of $100/month but there were no issues. I live in a really low-income area too.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you where you are at. Good luck! _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |

| It just depends on the area you live in. Where I use to live yea, if needed to do a vet visit and make payments. I probably wouldn't have had any issues. But where I live now they would probably laugh me out of the office. Heck I bought a PU truck from the town I lived in I gave him 200 bucks said I will be back Friday to pay the rest of the DP 1300 bucks. Before I made it to the door he threw me the keys to the truck and said see ya Friday...lol |

| While I agree to a point... a broken bone isn't something like a cut or a scrape or a dog bite. That is a serious thing and if it isn't set correctly soon it is very painful for the dog as well as can create bigger problems. What once could have been as simple as setting it and casting it now may have to be something surgically repaired (which will cost even more.) I am no rich person. Not in the slightest. I budget my money and do the best I can do. I also have a vet that I know and see pretty regularly. If there was a problem they would (and have) work with me. That combined with the emergency credit card have me covered. As a dog owner you need to think ahead. For what it's worth there is insurance that will cover accidents for $12 a month.

Good luck! my hubby wrote that while i was trying to keep a from walkin on his hurt foot, at that moment of it being written there was nothing ls to do, i was splinting it so it wouldnt get worse and calling vets to find out where to go since i dont drive myself. |

I understand that there were other things on your mind. I am simply saying, don't be offended if people are reacting the way that they did. They have nothing else to go off of except what you wrote and based on that, I'd say their reactions were reasonable. I agree with Kristina. Establishing yourself at a vet is so important and it's for this exact reason. Being a regular, making payments or paying off your routine bills immediately makes an office more likely to work with you in emergency situations where you might not have the cash. Just let it be a lesson to everyone for the future. Routine matters are important not only for a dog's health, but for unfortunate circumstances like this. Did Ax get treated then at the last place you went? _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |

| So sorry to hear, I hope everything works out for you. Everyone has your pups best interest at heart - although I do agree you could do without some comments right now - the initial post was just misunderstood! The important thing is to try and get him seen and the leg set and casted, does your other half drive? Can you borrow a friend for an hour or two and literally just drive up to vets and see if they will see you, don't even mention the money - sort it out with them later! Everyone here will support you so don't take the comments personally but just take them as "he needs to see a vet" Best of luck! |

Best of luck! That was what I meant by just go to the vets. lol. I guess it could have been said alittle clearer. Some vets wont deal with you if you say upfront that you can't pay the entire thing, but most will work with you after they have treated them. I know that was how we had to do it with the emergency vet here. Sometimes they may keep the pet until you can pay in full, but most wont because that costs them more money due to taking up a kennel etc. If you felt attacked in anyway, I apologize. I know that from the short time I have been here, not only do these fellow husky owners NOT treat people badly, but they say things only to help your dog. We all just tried to get across that a Vet was inaviodable, and I'm sorry if it came across as ANYTHING else. |

First of all let me say that YAY I'M SO HAPPY HE'S OUT OF THE CLEAR! I've been worried about it all day! Secondly, I did not by any means mean to bash Christina, but her origingal post was very vague and by saying "guess we'll just try to splint it" was a major WOAH to me. Like Kristina mentioned, I'm not well off, AT ALL actually, but we have a back up plan if anything were to happen to either of the pups. If whatever $ we had saved was used for whatever reason we'd get a loan or do SOMETHING. Which is what Christina did. She figured it out and that's what a good dog mom would do. I was going based off of her original post. I understand that she must have been very stressed out at the moment and just posted quickly, but we as forum members don't know that. So glad AX is doing well! Hugs to him and you! Glad it's over |

| I'm SO glad you were able to get Ax medical care!! I know it is hard to find money for all the kids' needs and the pets' needs and the vehicle's needs and the house needs and YOUR needs... Auuggg! It seems like it never ends! Please consider beginning some serious "door training" with Ax when he feels better. I'm all about prevention. Huskies are the worst for darting out open doors. You can teach him that if a door opens, he should sit. It's a long, long, long process and not 100% fool-proof but it's worth a shot in my opinion. We have Sabaka sit and wait every time he goes outside or every time we go outside. He is now sitting and watching while we feed the cat (with cat in sight) on the front porch without him trying to dart out. While he is sitting and waiting, I stick my head out the back door to make sure the gate is latched before he is allowed to go out. There are some things that would cause him to forget his manners and take off: a loose dog, kids playing in the street, a visitor at the door... But we're trying!! |
