Try giving them some marrow bones and see if that helps. My female Dalmatian had TERRIBLE tartar on her teeth! I started giving her the bones and boy have they started cleaning up! Still not perfect, but a lot better than what they were. Plus it's cheaper then a dental cleaning!

For most dental cleanings, dogs are put under. There are some places that advertise dental cleaning without having to put them under but I'm not sure what the includes or how your pet's teeth would be cleaned or if it would be as thorough of a cleaning compared to when they put your pet under.

I had Ginger's teeth cleaned once and that was it. She is prone to tartar build up so we do have to brush her teeth at least once or twice a week. We've had her almost 2 years and we are managing to maintain her teeth from being cleaned again (which I prefer not to do for a few reasons: cost and having her put under).

We maintain both Ginger's and Storm's dental health with Zuke's Z Bones every morning, and at least one bone a week (raw marrow bone, smoked beef jerkey marrow bone or himalayan chew).

If your pet has tartar build up, brushing alone may not get it off. Try PetzLife - it does help with getting tartar off but you have to be diligent about using it.

When looking for a toothpaste, make sure you find one that is an enzyme toothpaste - mixed with their saliva, it'll help break down the plaque that will turn into tartar when it hardens. I found a beef flavored one that Ginger and Storm likes a lot so they think they're getting a treat.

What a teeth cleaning really does it clean all the bacteria under the gumline, which is the most important area. Removing the tartar is somewhat cosmetic. How do her gums look? If there is a red line where the gums meet the teeth then she possibly has some gingivitis and/or periodontal disease, then a teeth cleaning might be a proactive option. If her gums still look somewhat healthy, I'd start bushing them daily (or twice daily) and see how it goes. I brush Kale's teeth every morning with PetZLife gel (the mint one lol). He has a little bit of tartar buildup on his 4th premolars but his gums look great so I'm not worrying.
