Exactly Again, I wasn't trying to start anything, but I am very careful not to let generalizations go on this forum, ESPECIALLY when it comes to breeders. Based on the details you provided in your last few posts, yes, your breeder seems very reputable. However, based on what you FIRST wrote, that was very questionable I didn't mean to cause offense. It's just years of being on forums and I don't like misinformation spreading. BYBs are a huge problem as we all know and the first step to counteract them is education. So... I try and do my part _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |

Shooting for a grey-white coat and double blue eyes, but Andrea says their coats will end up being a bit lighter and more silver than grey. As a part of her agreement to let us adopt one of her puppies, we need to put together a fence in our yard. A real fence can't be constructed around our yard because we live near a lake, says our city's guidelines. What are some alternatives we could use to let the puppy roam around in our yard? |

| Well you can use an x-pen at first. Are you allowed to put up an outdoor kennel? You can put up a zip tie and tie out attached to it, so the dog can walk up and down it. Unfortunately, invisible fences don't work that well with huskies. Their fur is really thick, so it's hard for them to get shocked. They are creative and can figure out that they only get shocked as they go past the fence and then they are free. Are you willing to walk the dog multiple times a day for exercise and to go potty? Do you have a dog park near by?
BTW, I love that kennel's website! lol. I'll have to e-mail them and see what server, or whatever you call it, they used. _________________ -Sara |

| Ditto to what Sara said about invisible fences. They don't work for huskies or other determined dogs. An animal control officer told me he had picked up a stray rottweiler with burn marks on his neck from an invisible fence.
Huskies can't be off leash in an unfenced area until they are older and slowed down. Some of them even can't even be free then!
I'm in the same boat as you with the no fence rule .The breeder from whom we got Bodhi wanted us to have one. Even though I'm in the country, I live in an area with restrictions on fences for wildlife. We have a 10 X 15 dog run under the house where Bodhi is during the time we aren't home. It has a cement floor, roof and 6'4" tall sides. Also, since he escaped once, it has double locks and a bike cable reinforcement around the gate post. In winter, I put blue tarps 3/4 of the way up the sides so rain can't blow in.
The first months we had Bodhi, I took him to work with me in his crate, and let him out every hour or so to pee and drink water. This worked because we got him in winter. It wouldn't have if it was summer. But you are in Seattle, so conditions should be similar. After awhile, I started lengthening the time he was in the crate without a break, then transitioned to the dog run. Now he's in the run for 4-6 hours at a time. He gets a run each day and two long walks. A tired husky is a compliant husky. But some huskies will tire you out before they get even close to being tired. |

| So when would you use a dog run? Leaving the dog outside in the run seems like a good idea when no one's home, but how do you proof it so the dog can't escape? One of my worries is coming home to an empty run that's either been tampered with by the dog or someone else. I would imagine placing the run on top of cement or some surface/material that the dog can't dig through would help...but unfortunately, we don't have an area around our home like that.
Another alternative is our elevated deck. It has a staircase that can be blocked off and the handrails are fairly high. Up to a certain age, I think this would work until the dog is tall enough to jump over them...but I hope they would also be smart enough by then to understand that it's a one story drop... |

| We use the dog run when we aren't home. If we are home, Bodhi is with us. As I said, I do not think he can get out of the dog run now (Knock on wood). Huskies are very determined and smart. If there is a weak link, they will find it. I check the run every day for evidence that he's working on a place.
Inside is best, but while they are young, huskies are serious home remodelers. I learned the hard way with my first two. But eventually, they mellowed at about age 6 and could be left in the house alone.
